The Most Politically Driven Sports Tournament
The African Cup of Nations(AFCON) is a 2-year futbol tournament hosted by the Confederation of African Football. A continental competition featuring national teams from across Africa, with group-stage matches and playoffs held over four weeks. Through action-filled and comedic games, AFCON has grown to be one of the most entertaining tournaments in modern times. However, through a series of questionable final scores, many eyebrows were raised, questioning the credibility behind the competition itself.
The biennial AFCON Futbol tournament concluded with an emotionally driven final match played by Morocco and Senegal. With Segenal winning the match with a goal scored in overtime, controversy sparked surrounding the officiating of the match.
The game began with both sides evenly matched and decent officiating. As the game progressed, the referee’s decisions began to favor the Moroccan National team. The tension grew as Senegal scored a last-minute goal later deemed disallowed by the VAR. As the game seemed to progress into overtime, the Moroccan’s were awarded a last minute penalty. In disbelief of the decision by the referee, the Senegal National team stormed off the field in protest of the officiating. Even so, the captain of the Senegal team, Sadio Mane, chivalrously brought his team to finish the match to preserve the reputation of African Futbol(Church). The game continued with Morocco missing the penalty, and Senegal eventually winning the tournament. However, the actions of Senegal didn’t go unnoticed as Morocco demanded for a punishment against the Senegal protest. As the punishment for Senegal is yet to be decided, this result inevitably tarnished the credibility of African Futbol.
This hasn’t been the first time that both players and the coaching staff have called upon the questionable officiating in AFCON. In 2021, an uproar similar to the final 2026 happened when a referee prematurely ended a football match between Tunisia and Malia in the 85th minute of the match instead of the 90th minute. The referee faced intense backlash from the Tunisian National team, claiming he prematurely ended the match making Tunisia lose 1-0. However, even after the referee decided to conclude the match, the Tunisian National team refused to take the field to play the final 5 minutes (Stevens). This event sparked conflicts within the sportsmanship of the tournament, making players and viewers wonder whether the tournament was a fair competition. This also raises concerns about whether the tournament was just a cheap way to fund money for the African team, using the players’ dedication and reputation in exchange for higher gross income.
On top of the competition itself, the Moroccan king decided to speak out on the controversy from the AFCON final match. He highlighted that the public relations between Senegal and Morocco would remain unchanged, also highlighting the gross income that came from the game itself. He stated that the futbol final had increased gross income for over 90% compared to past years, insinuating that people should be more focused on the positive net gross income instead of the controversy with the tournament(MEO). The king highlights the importance of the money that was brought by the tournament, furthering the idea that AFCON is simply for money. The point the King of Morocco tries to get across is the exact reason why AFCON matches feel predecided by officials, instead of having fair, competition-heavy matches. The tournament feels more scripted, strictly for the entertainment of the viewer, to gain more money.
With Senegal being the first country to publicly protest against this system during a match, it sparks a new era where not only will the prestige of African Futbol be questioned even further, but it might pave the way for players to speak out against a corrupt system.
