Two years ago, I was in Dunhuang, in the northwest of China, following a group of Przewalski\u2019s horses across a stretch of desert that felt both endless and fragile. The work was quiet and slow. Most of what I did was observe\u2014watching how the horses moved, how they stayed together, how they responded to the landscape around them. At the time, I thought sustainability meant exactly this: protecting, monitoring, and, when necessary, stepping in to help.<\/p>\n

That idea didn\u2019t last long.<\/p>\n

One afternoon, the sky turned yellow-gray without much warning. The wind picked up quickly, carrying sand that stung my face and blurred everything into motion. A sandstorm rolled in faster than I expected. As I made my way back, I noticed a horse lying in the distance. Something felt wrong. When I got closer, I realized its leg was broken.<\/p>\n

For a moment, I didn\u2019t think\u2014I just moved toward it. That reaction felt automatic, like the only reasonable thing to do. But the wind kept getting stronger. I could barely see. I had no equipment, no way to move a wild animal that large, and no way to stay there safely for long. The closer I got, the more obvious it became: I couldn\u2019t help.<\/p>\n

So I stopped. And then I turned around.<\/p>\n

It didn\u2019t feel like a decision. It felt like failure.<\/p>\n

That moment stayed with me long after the storm passed. I kept replaying it in my head, asking myself the same question: if I see harm and don\u2019t act, what does that say about me? Before this, I thought sustainability was about action\u2014reducing harm, fixing problems, stepping in when something went wrong. But standing in that storm, I realized that wanting to help and being able to help are not the same thing.<\/p>\n

Later, my guide explained something that I hadn\u2019t fully considered before. Intervening could disrupt the ecosystem. Wild animals are not meant to depend on human rescue in every moment of distress. Sometimes, letting things unfold is part of maintaining balance, even when it feels uncomfortable. At first, I resisted that idea. It sounded like an excuse for inaction. But the more I thought about it, the more I understood that the situation was bigger than my immediate reaction.<\/p>\n

Sustainability, I started to realize, is not always about doing something. Sometimes it is about recognizing when not to act\u2014when intervention might create more harm than good. It is about understanding limits, not just of individuals, but of systems.<\/p>\n

That experience also changed how I think about scale. At the time, the sandstorm felt like a purely natural event, something unpredictable and local. But I later learned that storms like that have become more intense due to climate change. What I experienced in that moment was not just about one injured horse in the desert. It was connected to patterns of energy use, industrial activity, and environmental change happening far beyond Dunhuang.<\/p>\n

That realization made the situation even more complicated. The problem was not that I didn\u2019t act in that moment. The problem is that many of the forces shaping that moment exist at a scale where individual action feels almost irrelevant. And yet, that doesn\u2019t mean responsibility disappears.<\/p>\n

If anything, it shifts.<\/p>\n

I still think about that horse sometimes. Not as something I failed to fix, but as something that forced me to rethink what sustainability actually means. It\u2019s not a single action, or even a series of actions. It\u2019s a way of staying engaged with problems that don\u2019t have clear solutions. It\u2019s accepting that there will be moments where you don\u2019t know what the right choice is\u2014or where there isn\u2019t one.<\/p>\n

Back on campus, sustainability often shows up in small, visible ways: recycling bins, energy-saving campaigns, and conversations about reducing waste. Those things matter. But they can also make sustainability feel simple, like a checklist. What I learned in the desert is that it\u2019s much messier than that. It involves uncertainty, trade-offs, and sometimes restraint.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t help that horse. That part hasn\u2019t changed. But the way I understand that moment has. Sustainability isn\u2019t about always being able to act.
