Edgardo Perez Morales

Biography
I am a historian of Latin America and the Caribbean, studying slavery, anti-slavery, legal culture, and race in the Americas during the early modern period through the Age of Revolutions. I specialize on Colombia and its intersections with the Antilles and the Atlantic World. After majoring in History at Universidad Nacional de Colombia (Medellín), I graduated with a Masters degree in Cultural Studies from Universidad Andina Simón Bolívar (Quito, Ecuador), and a PhD in History from the University of Michigan. I teach classes on Colonial Latin America, the Atlanic World, Afro-Latin America, slavery, race, and gender. In my teaching and research, I draw on 20th century social theory, especially the contributions of Norbert Elias and the “process sociology” approach, as well as on critical and literary perspectives on slavery and race by Afro-Caribbean writers like Edouard Glissant and Edwidge Danticat
