The minimum stipend set by the USC Graduate School for A.Y. 2025-2026 is $41,200. USC encourages students to also seek additional external funding to supplement one\u2019s research and conference travel. Students who successfully apply for and receive external fellowships or dissertation fellowships are eligible to receive funding top-ups from the USC Graduate School. Students may continue to add and drop classes after this deadline.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\">International students must complete their <a href=\"https:\/\/ois.usc.edu\/new-students\/firstweeks\/immigration-status-verification-isv\/\">Immigration Verification Status<\/a> with the Office of International Services before they can register for classes. They also need to set up a <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/administration-finance\/payroll-services\/glacier\/\">GLACIER<\/a> account for tax purposes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\">For information on when USC Financial Aid disburses stipend payments, students should consult the stipend calendars:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><span style=\"font-size: large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/financialaid.usc.edu\/general\/stipend-domestic.html\">Domestic Student Stipend Calendar<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/financialaid.usc.edu\/general\/stipend-international.html\">International Student Stipend Calendar<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\">Domestic students and permanent residents will not receive a W-2 while on fellowship, but instead will receive a <a href=\"https:\/\/graduateschool.usc.edu\/current-students\/tax-information-for-graduate-students-at-usc\/\">1098-T form<\/a>.\u00a0 Students should consult with the IRS to determine if they need to submit quarterly estimated taxes on their fellowship stipend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large\"><strong>Tips for Stipends Payments<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To receive stipend payments faster, sign up for Direct Deposit in <a href=\"https:\/\/my.usc.edu\/portal\/epay\/bridgecn.php\">e.Pay<\/a> through the myUSC portal.<\/li>\n<li>For those receiving paper checks, regularly update your address information. Domestic students and permanent residents should do this through the myUSC portal at <a href=\"http:\/\/experience.usc.edu\/\">ExperienceUSC<\/a>; international students should do this through <a href=\"https:\/\/wd5.myworkday.com\/usc\/login.flex\">Workday<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Report stipend errors as soon as possible. USC processes missing stipend reports weekly according to above stipend calendars.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n  <\/div><\/div>\n            \n                      <\/div>\n        <\/li>\n\n              <li>\n          <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion-trigger \" id=\"heading-1-2-r86aSgzxlr\" aria-controls=\"section-1-2-r86aSgzxlr\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-disabled=\"false\">\n                          <span class=\"item-title\">Graduate Assistantships<\/span>\n            \n                      <\/button>\n\n          <div id=\"section-1-2-r86aSgzxlr\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"heading-1-2-r86aSgzxlr\" class=\"accordion-panel\">\n\n                            \n    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div\n  class=\"cc--component-container cc--rich-text \"\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  >\n  <div class=\"c--component c--rich-text\"\n    \n      >\n\n    \n      \n<div class=\"f--field f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <p><span style=\"font-size: large\">In the second, third, and fourth years, Ph.D. students usually receive Graduate Assistantships as Teaching Assistants, Graders, or Research Assistants.<\/span><br \/>\n<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large\">As Ph.D. students are expected to prioritize their degree progress, these appointments expect a work commitment of 10 hours per week minimum but cannot exceed 20 hours per week on average.<\/span><br \/>\n<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large\">Re-appointment is contingent upon departmental need, successful performance of GA duties, and satisfactory academic progress toward the degree.<\/span><br \/>\n<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large\">For specific guidelines on GA responsibilities and expected professor\/GA conduct (among other topics), please consult the <a href=\"https:\/\/graduateschool.usc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/TA_RA_AL_Handbook_graduate_School.pdf\">Handbook for TAs, RAs, and ALs<\/a>.<\/span><br \/>\n<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large\">GAs must be set up in Workday and make an appointment with <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/administration-finance\/payroll-services\/\">Payroll Services<\/a> to present the appropriate I-9 documents within three business days of their official hire date. Domestic students and permanent residents will receive a W-2 for tax purposes; international students must update their <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/administration-finance\/payroll-services\/glacier\/\">GLACIER<\/a> account annually.<\/span><br \/>\n<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large\">Students on Graduate Assistantships are paid monthly according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/comptroller.usc.edu\/payroll-services\/payroll-schedules\/\">Payroll schedule<\/a>.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<h5>Teaching Assistants<\/h5>\n<p>\n<span style=\"font-size: large\">All students hired as Teaching Assistants must enroll in POIR 593 in their first semester of teaching.<\/span><br \/>\n<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: large\">For international students whose native language is not English, an offer of a TAship is contingent upon taking the <a href=\"https:\/\/ali.usc.edu\/ita\/\">International Teaching Assistant (ITA) Oral Exam<\/a> administered by USC&#8217;s American Language Institute and passing with at least a 5.0. This test must be taken no later than the first day of classes.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n  <\/div><\/div>\n            \n                      <\/div>\n        <\/li>\n\n              <li>\n          <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion-trigger \" id=\"heading-1-3-r86aSgzxlr\" aria-controls=\"section-1-3-r86aSgzxlr\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-disabled=\"false\">\n                          <span class=\"item-title\">Other POIR Fellowships and Scholarships<\/span>\n            \n                      <\/button>\n\n          <div id=\"section-1-3-r86aSgzxlr\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"heading-1-3-r86aSgzxlr\" class=\"accordion-panel\">\n\n                            \n    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div\n  class=\"cc--component-container cc--rich-text \"\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  >\n  <div class=\"c--component c--rich-text\"\n    \n      >\n\n    \n      \n<div class=\"f--field f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <p>Each year, the POIR Graduate Program releases a call for applications to current POIR graduate students available funding opportunities at that time. These include the Dissertation Completion Fellowship, the Endowed Fellowship, and other research and summer writing fellowships. Please consult with the Graduate Studies Director and\/or staff for more information. Calls for applications will be announced on the POIR listserv.<\/span><\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 100%;border-collapse: collapse\" border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"5\" cellpadding=\"5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<h4>USC Shoah Foundation&#8217;s Sandy and Steve Cozen Graduate Top-Off Fellowship<\/h4>\n<p>The USC Shoah Foundation\u2019s Sandy and Steve Cozen Graduate Top-Off Fellowship is offered to outstanding PhD students at USC. The top-off fellowship is intended to facilitate successful completion of their doctoral dissertation.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nThe top-off fellowship provides $4,000 support per academic year for two consecutive years to advanced-level PhD Candidates from all disciplines, and from any school or department at USC. To be eligible to be considered for the fellowship, students need to meet the following criteria:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Students\u2019 doctoral research has to utilize oral or visual history testimony and be situated within the fields of Holocaust and genocide studies, antisemitism studies, memory studies, history, oral history, or human rights.<\/li>\n<li>Students must have already been awarded full departmental and\/or university support equivalent to a 50% graduate assistantship. The Cozen Fellowship will then be used to \u201ctop-off\u201d the existing regular support offer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Please submit materials to the <a href=\"https:\/\/app.smartsheet.com\/b\/form\/d69d25603c40476a82861d362bf7ff4e\">application form<\/a>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<h4>Rockwell Dennis Hunt Scholastic Award and Trophy<\/h4>\n<h4>Application deadline: November 20, 2023 at 11:59pm<\/h4>\n<p>The Rockwell Dennis Hunt Scholastic Award and Trophy honors USC graduate students whose undergraduate degree is from USC.
