All registrations are subject to the availability of seats and the physical capacity limits of the classroom.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 40px;\">Please note that the department will not approve requests to add seats to closed (i.e. full) courses unless:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The student is a senior planning to graduate within the academic year;<\/li>\n<li>The course is required for their degree progress; and<\/li>\n<li>There are no alternative courses available.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 40px;\">Eligible students should complete the Permission to <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/poir\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/65\/2025\/10\/Add-Closed-Course-Form_2025-2026_Updated.pdf\">Add a Closed Course Form<\/a> and submit it to DMC 330 for department approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n  <\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n  \n    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div\n  class=\"cc--component-container cc--rich-text \"\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  >\n  <div class=\"c--component c--rich-text\"\n    \n      >\n\n    \n      \n<div class=\"f--field f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <h3>IR D-Clearance<\/h3>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 40px;\">To request D-Clearance for IR 210, IR 304, IR 320, IR 339, and 400-level IR courses, please complete this form: <a href=\"https:\/\/forms.gle\/2ZiVsoypsj2UWeQa7\">IR D-Clearance Survey<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 40px; margin-bottom: 40px;\">Requests are processed in 2-3 business days. Students will be notified by email once their request has been processed.<\/p>\n<h4>Important D-Clearance Policies<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 40px;\">400-level courses are only available to students who have completed at least 64 units (not including units in progress).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px; margin-top: 40px;\">\u2192 Check your STARS report before submitting a D-Clearance request.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 40px;\">IR 320 and IR 304 are initially restricted to INCO majors who will be graduating in two semesters or less.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px; margin-top: 40px;\">\u2192 Starting in Week 4 of registration, clearance will open to all IR majors based on class standing (i.e. senior, junior, sophomore, etc.).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 40px;\">IR 447 \/ MDES 441 Cities of the Middle East is offered through the Middle East Studies Deparment.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px; margin-top: 40px;\">\u2192 No D-Clearance is required. Register for MDES 441.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 40px;\">Due to limited space, IR 210 and 400-level IR courses are reserved for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>IR majors and minors<\/li>\n<li>Incoming IR transfer students<\/li>\n<li>Majors whose programs require IR courses (e.g., Political Economy BA, Global Health BS, Human Security minor)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px; margin-top: 40px;\">Students from other departments may submit requests in early August (Fall) or early January (Spring) if seats are still open.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 40px;\">If you miss one or more classes and register late, you must get permission from the instructor, even if you enrolled via WebReg.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n  <\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n  \n    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div\n  class=\"cc--component-container cc--rich-text \"\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  >\n  <div class=\"c--component c--rich-text\"\n    \n      >\n\n    \n      \n<div class=\"f--field f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <p style=\"margin-top: 40px;\">\n<h3>POSC D-Clearance<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 40px;\">Political Science courses generally do not require D-Clearance unless an application is required as with the following courses:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 40px;\">POSC 391\/392: Political Science Honors Program. Applications are accepted in the Spring semester. D-Clearance is granted once the instructor informs the department of your admission to the program.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px; margin-top: 40px;\">\u2192 Applications for 2026-2027 are due by April 12, 2026. <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/poir\/undergraduate-honors\/\">More info<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 40px;\">POSC 395: Political Science Internship\/Research course run by the <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/center-for-political-future\/jesse-m-unruh-institute-of-politics\/internships-and-career-development\/faqs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Unruh Institute<\/a>. Students should contact <a href=\"mailto:unruhins@usc.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unruhins@usc.edu<\/a> for more information.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 40px;\">POSC 398: Trial Advocacy\/Mock Trial team. Try outs are held in the Fall semester. D-Clearance is granted once the instructor informs the department of your admission to the program.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 40px;\">If ever there is D-Clearance required for a course that is not listed above, please contact the listed professor for more information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n  <\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n  \n    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div\n  class=\"cc--component-container cc--rich-text \"\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  >\n  <div class=\"c--component c--rich-text\"\n    \n      >\n\n    \n      \n<div class=\"f--field f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <p style=\"margin-top: 40px;\">\n<h3>Directed Research (IR or POSC 490x)<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 40px;\">Directed Research is an opportunity for students under the direction of a POIR faculty to explore a specific topic in greater depth than can be achieved in a regular course or to assist a faculty in their research. Students who wish to undertake a Directed Research must submit the <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/poir\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/65\/2026\/03\/IR_POSC_490_Contract_Form_2026_fillable.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">IR\/POSC 490x Form<\/a> and a syllabus developed in consultation with the faculty advisor to the Director of Undergraduate Studies in DMC 330 by the end of the first week of classes to receive approval and D-Clearance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 40px;\">Note: Up to 4.0 units of Directed Research may count for elective credit toward the major (POSC\/IR), but may not be used to satisfy the 400-level requirement in IR.
