The areas of research span both pure and applied areas with research opportunities within the Department of Physics and Astronomy as well as the groups of our joint faculty.<\/p>\n<p>Those areas include experimental science, computation, and pure theory. Our research laboratories include lasers, optical measurement systems, low temperature facilities, cluster and atomic beam equipment, materials growth and characterization, biomaterials handling, and one of the fastest supercomputers in the world. In addition to the individual laboratories of faculty, graduate students gain access to the\u00a0world-class\u00a0research facilities of USC, which include:\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usc.edu\/dept\/CEMMA\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Center for Electron Microscopy and MicroAnalysis (CEMMA)<\/a>;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/keck.usc.edu\/Research\/Facilities_and_Resources\/Imaging\/Molecular_Imaging_Center.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Molecular Imaging Center<\/a>;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nanofab.usc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Keck Photonics Center<\/a>;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/chem.usc.edu\/dept\/facilities.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chemistry Instrumentation Facility<\/a>;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/nanobiophysicscore\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NanoBioPhysics Core Facility<\/a>;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/uscnorriscancer.usc.edu\/core\/Confocal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cell and Tissue Imaging Facility<\/a>;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/keck.usc.edu\/proteomics-core-facility\/%20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Proteomics Core Facility<\/a>;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.isi.edu\/research_groups\/quantum_computing\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the D-Wave experimental quantum computer<\/a><\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/hpcc.usc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the High Performance Computing Center<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here are some of the research groups currently taking PhD students:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><a title=\"Astronomy and Cosmology\" href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/physics\/astrocosmo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Astrophysics and Cosmology<br \/>\n<\/a><a title=\"Biological Physics\" href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/physics\/biologicalphysics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Biological Physics<\/a><a title=\"Computational Physics\" href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/physics\/computational-physics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><br \/>\n<\/a><a title=\"Condensed Matter and Nanophysics\" href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/physics\/amocondensedmatter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AMO\/Condensed Matter Physics<br \/>\n<\/a><a title=\"High Energy Physics\" href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/physics\/highenergy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">High Energy Physics<br \/>\n<\/a><a title=\"Quantum Information Science\" href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/physics\/quantum-information-science\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Quantum Information Science<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n                      <\/div>\n\n\n        <\/div>\n      \n        <div class=\"card\">\n\n          \n          <div class=\"text-container\">\n            \n                            <h3>\n                                      <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/physics\/physical-biology-phd-program\/\" >\n                  \n                    PhD in Physical Biology\n\n                                      <\/a>\n                                  <\/h3>\n            \n                              \n<div class=\"f--field f--description\">\n\n    \n  <p>The <strong>Physical Biology (PBIO)<\/strong> PhD program is designed for graduate students who seek a quantitative framework for understanding the physical principles of biological organization and function. These students may have backgrounds from physics, engineering, mathematics and chemistry, but seek to wield their quantitative skills in the basic or applied life sciences. The program is also for students with training in the biological sciences looking for training and research opportunities grounded the physical sciences. and who seek a fundamental understanding of biological systems not emphasized in PhD programs associated with departments of biology, medicine, bioinformatics, or engineering. Graduates will likely move onto careers including medicine, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, as well as career opportunities open to graduates with training in the physical sciences. Successful candidates will be admitted to the PhD program at USC and perform research at Carnegie Observatories in Pasadena. The training faculty in the MBPH program includes faculty members from multiple departments at USC who have research programs in areas including structural biology, neuroscience, membrane biophysics, cellular biophysics, and theoretical biophysics. Students are usually admitted to the MBPH program on the research-based thesis track; however, in special circumstances applications to the non-thesis track will be considered.<\/p>\n<p>Please visit to the construction of the first small quantum information processors and quantum communication systems.\u00a0 Both established companies (like IBM, Google, Intel and Microsoft) and startups (like ID Quantique, D-Wave, Rigetti and IonQ) have begun investing large amounts into the development and commercialization of quantum technologies.\u00a0 Based on this investment and growth in the field, there are increasing opportunities for engineers with a background in quantum information science to work on the design, construction and programming of quantum systems.\u00a0 The curriculum of the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/viterbigradadmission.usc.edu\/programs\/masters\/msprograms\/electrical-computer-engineering\/ms-in-quantum-information-science\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">Master of Science in Quantum Information Systems at USC<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0is designed to produce well-rounded graduates who are prepared to tackle the diverse challenges of creating new quantum technologies.\u00a0 Our faculty includes top experts in Quantum Information Science from the Electrical Engineering, Physics, and Chemistry Departments.\u00a0 Graduates may pursue careers at major technology companies that are exploring advances in or applications of Quantum Information Science.\u00a0 Alternatively, they may wish to look
