Membership, through collegiate chapters, is open to anyone interested in physics. The only requirement for membership is that you be interested in physics. Besides physics majors, our members include majors in astronomy, chemistry, computer science, engineering, geology, mathematics, medicine, and other fields. SPS is open to everyone.<\/p>\n<p>Within SPS is housed\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spsnational.org\/node\/816\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sigma Pi Sigma<\/a><\/strong>, the national physics\u00a0honor society, which elects members on the basis of outstanding academic achievement.\u00a0 This unique two-in-one society operates within the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aip.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Institute\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aip.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">of Physics<\/a><\/strong>, an umbrella organization for ten other professional science societies.<\/p>\n<h4><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2765 aligncenter\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\" src=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/physics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2024\/04\/SPSLogo-2024-300x293.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"271\" height=\"265\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/physics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2024\/04\/SPSLogo-2024-300x293.png 300w, https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/physics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2024\/04\/SPSLogo-2024-1024x1001.png 1024w, https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/physics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2024\/04\/SPSLogo-2024-768x751.png 768w, https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/physics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2024\/04\/SPSLogo-2024-1536x1502.png 1536w, https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/physics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/47\/2024\/04\/SPSLogo-2024.png 1625w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 271px) 100vw, 271px\" \/><strong>Purpose and Mission<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>SPS is a chapter based society that exists to help students transfor<\/p>\n<p>m themselves into contributing members of the professional community. Traditional coursework develops only one range of skills. Other skills needed to flourish professionally include effective communication and personal interactions, leadership experience, establishing a personal network of contacts, presenting scholarly work in professional meetings and journals, research experiences, and outreach services to the campus and local communities. Through its members, advisers, chapters, and leadership, SPS enables national initiatives and local impacts within the community.\u00a0SPS supports students, advisers, and departments to improve the overall community.<\/p>\n<p>SPS wants to support every undergraduate student with an interest in physics and astronomy excel. SPS seeks to assist every undergraduate department help students succeed.
