The\u00a0USC Dornsife Ph.D. Academy\u00a0<\/a>supports Dornsife Ph.D. students to help them thrive during each year of their Ph.D. program. The Ph.D. Academy wants to highlight the amazing students that are a part of our unique community.<\/p>\n

This special spotlight is on Magdalene Isabel Marie Smith, <\/strong>a graduating Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Earth Sciences. We will have the pleasure of seeing Isabel walk at the 2025 Ph.D. Hooding Ceremony on May 14, 2025.<\/p>\n

Thesis title<\/strong>: Mercury in a Thawing Arctic: Land, Water & Wild Foods<\/em><\/p>\n

Isabel’s research looks specifically at the transport of mercury to understand permafrost degradation and identify risks associated with climate change.<\/p>\n

Josh West<\/strong> and Emily Seelen<\/strong> have been amazing advisors and mentors throughout my PhD experience. They have always offered great feedback on my writing and helped to direct my research when I become lost.<\/p>\n

What are your plans and aspirations for the future, now that you’ve completed your PhD?
\n<\/strong><\/em>I am applying for Congressional Fellowships so that use my knowledge of science to help policy makers make informed decisions on Capitol Hill.<\/p>\n
