CHARLIE comes on stage. He wears a button down under a wool coat. A scarf sits around his neck. The stage is bare except for maybe a wall, something for him to lean on. He narrates vaguely like he\u2019s in a noir film.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

CHARLIE
\nThis story happened on a night like any other, in a town like any other, outside of a bar like any other. There was a neon sign in the window.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A neon sign that says \u201cneon sign<\/strong>\u201d lights up. Whenever Charlie narrates, the sign says \u201cneon sign<\/strong>,\u201d while in moments of reality, the sign says \u201cbar<\/strong>,\u201d and turns off in Charlie\u2019s imagination. There are stiff changes between the dream and reality for everything and everyone but Charlie.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A police car occasionally passed by.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Two actors in black holding police lights run in front of him.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It had rained a little earlier, and puddles were still there to dampen the soles of passersby.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

An actor dumps a bucket of water on stage in front of him.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I came to the bar after work with some demanding colleagues.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A window illuminates below the sign, through which we can see the silhouettes of men and women, talking, laughing, and drinking.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

They\u2019re nice enough people, just not exactly my type of nice enough people. But I had exhausted my supply of \u201csome other time\u201ds. We get here, and quickly I take my normal, quiet position at the bar. Listening, but on the fringe, where I can easily step away for the bathroom, or a cigarette.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He holds up his hand as if he has a cigarette between his fingers. An actor places a cigarette there, lights it with a Zippo, then is gone.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I stood here for some time planning what I could say exactly to my coworkers.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

CHARLIE breaks the noir narration and assumes a less confident energy. \u201cBar<\/strong>\u201d turns on.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Hey, guys I just got a call from my mom, there\u2019s a bit of a family emergency so I can\u2019t stay any longer\u2014no, no. I can\u2019t lie. If I lie I\u2019ll have to continue lying on Monday, and Tuesday, and most likely for the rest of my career here\u2026Hey guys, I\u2019m just gonna go. Can I do that? Can I just say I\u2019m gonna leave with no reason? No, I gotta give a reason otherwise they can convince me to stay longer. Hey guys, thanks for inviting me out but it\u2019s getting late, I\u2019m gonna head home. Ugh! That\u2019s the most cliched excuse I can give!…I guess, I could just leave right now\u2026<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cNeon sign<\/strong>.\u201d He returns to the noir narration.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

While I considered the pros and cons of the Irish Goodbye, she walked up.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A subtly beautiful woman, similarly attired approaches him.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A subtly beautiful woman, similarly attired, approached me. Had she been in the same bar as me? Did I only notice her now by the orange glow of the street light and not by the dim, golden lights inside? Or was there another bar or restaurant closeby, that she similarly fled for a quiet cigarette? Whatever it may have been, she approached me with those three words:<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

WOMAN
\nGot a light?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

CHARLIE feels around in his pockets. Finding no lighter, he looks offstage to where the actor with the Zippo had left. Meanwhile the WOMAN steps forward, puts a hand on his chest and stands on her toes. Her cigarette presses against his and she slowly breathes in, lighting it. She pulls away and looks off, perhaps also leans against the wall. CHARLIE stands dumbfounded. Their \u201cfirst positions.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

CHARLIE
\n(narration but with the less confident energy)\u00a0<\/em>
\nNow what the hell do I say after that!<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Sign off<\/strong>. CHARLIE attempts to lean with one arm on the wall, misses, and falls to the ground. Quickly picks himself up. \u201cBar<\/strong>.\u201d They stand there looking out at the street. Window lights up somewhere, they turn their heads.\u00a0Sign off<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

CHARLIE
\nSo you come here often?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

WOMAN
\nIs that your follow up? The most cliched line in the book?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

CHARLIE
\nYou\u2019re right. I\u2019m sorry.
\n(To audience)\u00a0<\/em>
\nHow about…?
\n(To her, faux noir)<\/em>
\nWhat\u2019s a gal like you doing in a place like this?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

WOMAN
\n(same)<\/em>
\nA man done me wrong. I moved to the big city for him, then he moved on from me. Now I\u2019m just a country girl lost in a world she doesn\u2019t know.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Sign off<\/strong>. They laugh. Door opens and an actor leaves. It does not close. The last minute of \u201cAge of Consent\u201d by New Order can be heard.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

WOMAN
\nI love this song!<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

CHARLIE
\nMe too! New Order\u2019s great.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

They smile, but don\u2019t say more. Song shifts into \u201cTeenage Dream\u201d by T. Rex.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

WOMAN
\nHey\u2013you wanna dance?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

CHARLIE
\n(narration)<\/em>
\nPeople are always trying to get me to dance, but I never do. I don\u2019t know how to dance. I\u2019m afraid of people watching me try and fail to dance. I wish I wasn\u2019t because–
\n(to her)<\/em>
\nI would love to dance.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

They dance.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

WOMAN
\nSo why are you here?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

CHARLIE
\nOh, my coworkers kinda forced me to come.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

WOMAN
\nNo, why are you out here smoking alone? You don\u2019t seem like a smoker.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

CHARLIE
\nYeah. It\u2019s only occasionally, in times like these. It\u2019s an excuse to escape.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

WOMAN
\nDon\u2019t like your coworkers? What? Did they vote for the wrong guy? They smell bad? GASP…Do they hate New Order?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

CHARLIE
\n(laughing)<\/em>
\nNo, no it\u2019s not them. It\u2019s me. When I\u2019m around them, I feel one-dimensional. I feel like I\u2019m trying and failing to be a human. I\u2019m listening to them, worrying about whether I\u2019m reacting correctly and enough. And all my responses are paper thin and only yield awkward silences.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

WOMAN
\nYou don\u2019t seem like that to me.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

CHARLIE
\nI don\u2019t feel like that now.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

WOMAN
\nI wonder why that is?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

CHARLIE
\nMaybe you\u2019re different?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He twirls her and she ends in first position. \u201cBar<\/strong>.\u201d They both look at each other but never when the other is.\u00a0Sign off<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

CHARLIE
\n(attempting to be causal)\u00a0<\/em>
\nSo what shit-show are you taking a break from?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

WOMAN
\n(With tears in her eyes)<\/em>
\nWe were just having the reception for my dad\u2019s funeral, and I just needed a break from all of it. It just happened so suddenly–
\n(she breaks off into sobs)<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

CHARLIE
\nOh no, I\u2019m so sorry I didn\u2019t mean it like that.
\n(To the audience in narration)<\/em>
\nOr.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

WOMAN
\n(Back to normal)<\/em>
\nIt\u2019s my boyfriend\u2019s birthday. The party was getting pretty wild, so I just had to step out for a quick smoke to cool down.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cBar<\/strong>.\u201d First positions. Charlie looks down and notices his cigarette is almost out.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

CHARLIE
\n(under his breath)\u00a0<\/em>
\nSHIT!<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

His eyes start to dart back and forth. He does not want her to see him light another cigarette, but he has to to stay out here. The two actors with the police lights run back across stage. The WOMAN follows. CHARLIE turns and flicks the cigarette butt. Another actor runs onstage with a cigarette and the Zippo. CHARLIE turns back forward. WOMAN looks away from the police lights, notices his cigarette with confusion but doesn\u2019t question it. \u201cNeon sign<\/strong>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

CHARLIE
\nI have to tell you, I\u2019ve never actually seen any of those old noir films. I\u2019ve never actually ever picked up a girl at a bar. All my dating experience has been the result of getting close to some female friends. But you don\u2019t need to know that to realize I am out of my depth here.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

WOMAN
\nWho are you talking to?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

CHARLIE
\nOh, uh, just the audience\u2026<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

WOMAN
\nAre you telling them about this night? This five, maybe ten, minute period we stood here smoking?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

CHARLIE
\nYeah, it\u2019s an interesting story.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

WOMAN
\nTo tell to your friends, you didn\u2019t have to mount a whole theatrical production about it!<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

CHARLIE
\nI\u2019m sorry, I\u2019ve just been having some bad luck with\u2013Wait, is this what you actually think, or is this just my paranoid mind making you say these things?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

WOMAN
\nIt\u2019s one hundred percent the latter.
\n(Before returning to her silent position)\u00a0<\/em>
\nOr is it?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cBar<\/strong>.\u201d First position.\u00a0Sign off<\/strong>. She goes to walk forward, Charlie takes off his coat and puts it over the puddle. She smiles, and continues walking. The two actors with the police lights run across stage a third time, and a third actor throws a bucket of water on her. CHARLIE is completely dry. \u201cBar<\/strong>.\u201d First position. WOMAN shivers from the cold. Sign off. CHARLIE takes off his coat and offers it to her.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

WOMAN
\nThanks.
\n(She drapes it over herself)<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

CHARLIE
\nMy name\u2019s Charlie.
\n(Offers hand)<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

WOMAN
\n(Taking it)\u00a0<\/em>
\nAlice.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

CHARLIE
\nNice to meet you. What brings you out to this damp little corner of the world?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

WOMAN
\nOh, well, my coworkers kinda forced me with them to a bar around the corner. And I just had to get away for a little. That\u2019s why I originally took up smoking: it\u2019s an excuse to escape.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

CHARLIE
\nWhat\u2019s wrong with your coworkers? Bad music tastes? Never shut up about their kids? Pressure you to drink too much?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

WOMAN
\n(with a little smile)<\/em>
\nNo, no it\u2019s not them, it\u2019s me. I have trouble talking to them. The whole time I\u2019m half-listening to them, half-making sure that my face is responding correctly to what they\u2019re saying. That my affirmative nods and interjections come at the right time. And I look at them and can only think they see right through it all. That they see me as one-dimensional, see that I\u2019m attempting and failing to be a human.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

CHARLIE
\nYou don\u2019t seem that way to me.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

WOMAN
\nI don\u2019t feel that way now.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

CHARLIE
\nI wonder why that is?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

WOMAN
\nMaybe you\u2019re different.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cNeon sign<\/strong>\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

CHARLIE
\nIs that really what you would have said?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

WOMAN
\nI don\u2019t know. Maybe? You never asked.
\n(Handing him back his coat)\u00a0<\/em>
\nWe just stood here for five to ten minutes smoking in silence, until I eventually finished and walked away.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cBar<\/strong>.\u201d First position. WOMAN drops the cigarette and crushes it under her foot, and walks away. CHARLIE lingers there a moment longer, looking at the cigarette, where she stood, and where she walked away. Cursing himself, he drops his cigarette, crushes it under his foot, and walks away.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n <\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
