Study abroad was the first time I got to experience this for an extended period of time and really immerse myself in the daily life of a new country.<\/div>\n<div role=\"textbox\" aria-label=\"Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you select your program? \"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"textbox\" aria-label=\"Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you select your program? \">My favorite aspects of my program were how dedicated they were to helping us immerse ourselves in the daily life of Morocco. They made so many efforts that encouraged us to cultivate our own life and community in Rabat.<\/div>\n<div class=\"Ih4Dzb\">\n<div role=\"textbox\" aria-label=\"Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you select your program? \"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Qr7Oae\" role=\"listitem\">\n<div class=\"OxAavc NVbRL\" data-required=\"true\" data-item-id=\"2092459760\">\n<div class=\"pYfr3c\">\n<div class=\"prOLdf\">\n<div class=\"g53bl\">\n<div class=\"cTDvob D1wxyf RjsPE\" role=\"heading\" aria-describedby=\"i.desc.2092459760 c721\">\n<div class=\"Qr7Oae\" role=\"listitem\">\n<div class=\"OxAavc NVbRL\" data-required=\"true\" data-item-id=\"2092459760\">\n<div class=\"Ih4Dzb\">\n<div class=\"q4tvle JqSWld yqQS1\" role=\"textbox\" aria-label=\"What did you learn about your host country that surprised you?\">I was surprised at how welcoming people are in Morocco and how curious they are to learn about the experiences and perspectives of travelers who visit their country. One of my favorite memories while abroad is my host mom inviting my sister (who was visiting) and her friend over for dinner. Because of my appearance (I look very Egyptian), people every day assumed I was Moroccan, and when they discovered I wasn&#8217;t, they asked me about my ethnicity. So I had to get used to discussing my ethnicity multiple times on a daily basis. This wasn&#8217;t something I was used to or completely comfortable with at first. However, having an adjacent cultural background made me feel so accepted, and at home in Morocco, I could blend in as a native, and this was really cool to experience because it felt like I could navigate life as a local in a lot of ways. Discussing race and ethnicity in Morocco doesn&#8217;t have the same connotations as it does in America. For example, people assuming my ethnicity or race could be perceived as offensive in America, but in Morocco, that is not the case. Moroccan people are truly the most welcoming people I have ever met, and if you seek out community, it will be there for you. This scholarship was the &#8220;Blog Abroad Scholarship,&#8221; so I received a stipend for submitting creative blogs while I was abroad.
