You must attend both your <strong>general orientation\u00a0<\/strong>&amp;<strong>\u00a0program specific sessions<\/strong>\u00a0run by the Office of Overseas Studies.\u00a0<strong>Country specific orientation sessions<\/strong> are held throughout April (for Fall Semester) and November (for Spring Semester). <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">All orientations are mandatory<\/span>. Email <a href=\"mailto:overseas@usc.edu\">overseas@usc.edu<\/a> well in advance if you cannot attend.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Accept your offer<\/strong> from both Overseas Studies in your <a href=\"https:\/\/studenttravelabroad.usc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USC Student Travel Abroad portal<\/a> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>and<\/strong><\/span> your host institution to confirm your space.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Visit <a href=\"https:\/\/travel.state.gov\/content\/travel\/en\/passports.html\">the U.S. Department of State<\/a> for more information on obtaining a new passport or renewing an old one.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Student Visa:<\/strong> Find out if you need one, what the application timeline is, and what documents are required. Keep in mind that <strong>international students<\/strong> may have to follow procedures than U.S. citizens.<\/li>\n<li>Make copies of your <strong>personal documents<\/strong> (both sides of credit &amp; ATM\/debit cards, passport main ID page, student visa (if applicable), etc.); leave one set at home, bring one with you, and save to cloud storage.<\/li>\n<li>Complete all required forms and tasks in the <a href=\"https:\/\/studenttravelabroad.usc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>USC Student Travel Abroad portal<\/strong><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Complete any required <strong>program provider\/host institution forms<\/strong> by their deadline.<\/li>\n<li>Find out if your program provider\/host institution arranges housing for you or <strong>if you have to apply for\/arrange housing yourself<\/strong>. If you have to apply for\/arrange it yourself, pay close attention to all deadlines and apply as early as possible if housing is provided on a rolling or first come, first served basis.<\/li>\n<li>If you have a <strong>USC parking permit<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/transnet.usc.edu\/index.php\/how-to-purchase-a-permit-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">turn it in to Transportation Services<\/a> and inquire about obtaining a permit when you return to campus.<\/li>\n<li>If you are in <strong>USC Housing<\/strong>, complete the online Semester Away Release Form in your <a href=\"https:\/\/housingapp.usc.edu\/StarRezPortalX\/BBCC06DB\/1\/1\/Welcome_to_USC_Housi-Welcome_to_the_USC_H?UrlToken=9FBC3800\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USC housing portal<\/a>. After submitting the online portion, you will receive an email to come in-person to finish it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n  <\/div><\/div>\n            \n                      <\/div>\n        <\/li>\n\n              <li>\n          <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion-trigger \" id=\"heading-1-2-ihAS9_MLxR\" aria-controls=\"section-1-2-ihAS9_MLxR\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-disabled=\"false\">\n                          <span class=\"item-title\">Contacts to Update &#038; Staying Connected<\/span>\n            \n                      <\/button>\n\n          <div id=\"section-1-2-ihAS9_MLxR\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"heading-1-2-ihAS9_MLxR\" class=\"accordion-panel\">\n\n                            \n    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div\n  class=\"cc--component-container cc--rich-text \"\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  >\n  <div class=\"c--component c--rich-text\"\n    \n      >\n\n    \n      \n<div class=\"f--field f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <ul>\n<li>Provide Overseas Studies with your <strong>travel itinerary no less than 6 weeks before your departure <\/strong>in the USC Student Travel Abroad portal.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure that your <strong>USC email<\/strong> gets forwarded to any non-USC email account you may be using. You will be expected to read all email coming from our office and take action when necessary. We will not send emails to a non-USC account.<\/li>\n<li>Look into your options for <strong>mobile phones<\/strong> abroad &amp; consult with program alums for advice. Contact your provider to ask about using your phone abroad or unlocking your SIM card so you can purchase a new one in your host country.<\/li>\n<li>Connect to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/software.usc.edu\/vpn\/\">USC&#8217;s VPN<\/a><\/strong> to access USC resources &amp; to get around firewalls in some countries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n  <\/div><\/div>\n            \n                      <\/div>\n        <\/li>\n\n              <li>\n          <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion-trigger \" id=\"heading-1-3-ihAS9_MLxR\" aria-controls=\"section-1-3-ihAS9_MLxR\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-disabled=\"false\">\n                          <span class=\"item-title\">Prepare for Travel &#038; a New Culture<\/span>\n            \n                      <\/button>\n\n          <div id=\"section-1-3-ihAS9_MLxR\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"heading-1-3-ihAS9_MLxR\" class=\"accordion-panel\">\n\n                            \n    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div\n  class=\"cc--component-container cc--rich-text \"\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  >\n  <div class=\"c--component c--rich-text\"\n    \n      >\n\n    \n      \n<div class=\"f--field f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <ul>\n<li>Make sure you have your <strong>student visa<\/strong> (if required) well in advance of your departure.<\/li>\n<li><strong>International students<\/strong>: consult with an <a href=\"https:\/\/ois.usc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>OIS<\/strong> advisor<\/a> about obtaining necessary signatures before leaving USC.<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"OYPEnA font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">Make sure your<strong> laptop<\/strong> is insured, files are backed up, and you have the right <strong>plug adaptors<\/strong> for your host country.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Before packing your bags, find out about <strong>local standards of dress, weather, etc.<\/strong> Pack lightly and appropriately. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">If you cannot carry your luggage by yourself for a city block, you have overpacked.\u00a0<\/span>Check with your airline on <strong>baggage limits and fees<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Research<\/strong> rail passes, hostel cards, and purchase before leaving the U.S. if appropriate.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stay informed<\/strong> about developments in the country\/countries where you will travel. Visit the U.S. Department of State&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/travel.state.gov\/content\/travel\/en\/international-travel\/International-Travel-Country-Information-Pages.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">country information page<\/a> for the most current information and travel advisories before you depart and while abroad, as well as their <a href=\"https:\/\/travel.state.gov\/content\/travel\/en\/international-travel\/before-you-go\/travelers-with-special-considerations\/students.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study abroad guide<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/step.state.gov\/step\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Register in <strong>STEP<\/strong><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Read up on <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/overseas-studies\/resources-for-diversity-and-inclusion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>diversity<\/strong><\/a> in your host country, (including racial &amp; ethnic groups, women, heritage students, LGBTQ+ students, religious diversity, etc.). The Diversity Abroad community platform &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/beglobalii.com\/\">BeGlobalii<\/a>&#8221; is a great place to start.\n<ul>\n<li><em>LGBTQ+ students are encouraged to review <a href=\"https:\/\/lambdalegal.org\/tgnc-checklist-under-trump\/\">this article<\/a> by Lambda Legal regarding international travel and identity documents. The USC <a href=\"https:\/\/gould.usc.edu\/academics\/experiential\/clinics\/immigration\/\">Gould Immigration Clinic<\/a> and legal services provided at the <a href=\"https:\/\/lalgbtcenter.org\/services\/legal-services\/\">LA LGBT Center<\/a> are also recommended resources for LGBTQ+ students preparing to study abroad.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Get a good student-oriented <strong>travel guide<\/strong> such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lonelyplanet.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lonely Planet<\/a> (paperback, e-book, pdf, etc.) for your host country.<\/li>\n<li>Research the <strong>educational system<\/strong> in which you will be studying.<\/li>\n<li>Read <strong>online newspapers<\/strong> &amp; listen to <a href=\"https:\/\/radio-locator.com\/cgi-bin\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>radio stations<\/strong> online<\/a> from your host country to familiarize yourself with issues and current events there.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Brush up<\/strong> on your foreign language skills &amp; familiarize yourself with different varieties of English via newspapers, radio, films, Netflix, etc.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Get to know international students from your host country<\/strong> here at USC. Consider a <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/center-for-languages-and-cultures\/home\/students\/language-exchange-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Language Exchange Partner<\/strong><\/a> through the <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/center-for-languages-and-cultures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dornsife Center for Languages and Cultures.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Download the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.internationalsos.com\/assistance-app\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>International SOS app<\/strong><\/a> for safety alerts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n  <\/div><\/div>\n            \n                      <\/div>\n        <\/li>\n\n              <li>\n          <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion-trigger \" id=\"heading-1-4-ihAS9_MLxR\" aria-controls=\"section-1-4-ihAS9_MLxR\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-disabled=\"false\">\n                          <span class=\"item-title\">Figure Out Your Money Matters<\/span>\n            \n                      <\/button>\n\n          <div id=\"section-1-4-ihAS9_MLxR\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"heading-1-4-ihAS9_MLxR\" class=\"accordion-panel\">\n\n                            \n    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div\n  class=\"cc--component-container cc--rich-text \"\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  >\n  <div class=\"c--component c--rich-text\"\n    \n      >\n\n    \n      \n<div class=\"f--field f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <ul>\n<li>Familiarize yourself &amp; your parents with your program <strong>Cost Sheet,<\/strong> located in your program&#8217;s &#8220;Finances&#8221; tab.\u00a0If your parents are financing your studies, please share this information with them!<\/li>\n<li>Attend the <strong>financial aid meeting<\/strong> if you receive financial aid and read our <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/overseas-studies\/finances-cost-aid-scholarships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cost, aid and scholarships page<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Meet with a <strong>financial aid counselor<\/strong> if you have questions about your financial aid &amp; study abroad, and meet all financial aid deadlines for next year.<\/li>\n<li>Apply for <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/overseas-studies\/usc-scholarships-and-outside-scholarships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study abroad <strong>scholarships<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0Sign up for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sfs.usc.edu\/refunds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USC eRefund <\/a><\/strong>to get refunds deposited directly to your account.<\/li>\n<li>Verify that you have correct 4-digit <strong>PIN numbers<\/strong> for your credit\/debit cards.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Notify your credit card and bank companies <\/strong>about your upcoming travel to avoid having your account frozen abroad!<\/li>\n<li>Consider exchanging a small amount of <strong>foreign currency<\/strong> ahead of time, in case you have issues with your cards abroad.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n  <\/div><\/div>\n            \n                      <\/div>\n        <\/li>\n\n              <li>\n          <button type=\"button\" class=\"accordion-trigger \" id=\"heading-1-5-ihAS9_MLxR\" aria-controls=\"section-1-5-ihAS9_MLxR\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-disabled=\"false\">\n                          <span class=\"item-title\">Academic Preparations<\/span>\n            \n                      <\/button>\n\n          <div id=\"section-1-5-ihAS9_MLxR\" role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"heading-1-5-ihAS9_MLxR\" class=\"accordion-panel\">\n\n                            \n    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div\n  class=\"cc--component-container cc--rich-text \"\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  >\n  <div class=\"c--component c--rich-text\"\n    \n      >\n\n    \n      \n<div class=\"f--field f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <ul>\n<li>Know how to access your Overseas Studies <strong>Course Pre-Approval form<\/strong> (it\u2019s it your USC Student travel Abroad portal under Pre-Decision documents) &amp; check\u00a0with your major and minor advisers to ensure courses satisfy\u00a0<strong>requirements<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>If you want to take <strong>classes not approved on the CPA form<\/strong>, contact your academic advisor through AdviseUSC to see if you can earn major\/minor credit.<\/li>\n<li>Remember that you must be registered at USC while you are abroad! Also check out some of the many stress &amp; anxiety apps available.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Consult with health-care providers<\/strong> about any pre-existing conditions which may affect your participation.<\/li>\n<li>Bring your <strong>USC ID Card<\/strong>\u00a0and your\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.internationalsos.com\/\">INTERNATIONAL SOS<\/a>\u00a0card<\/strong>\u00a0with you overseas.<\/li>\n<li>Visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwnc.cdc.gov\/travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CDC website\u00a0<\/a>or the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pharmacyschool.usc.edu\/travel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USC Travel Clinic<\/a>\u00a0to learn about\u00a0<strong>risks, immunizations &amp; other precautions<\/strong>\u00a0for the countries you plan to visit.<\/li>\n<li>Obtain enough of your <strong>prescription medications<\/strong>\u00a0to last you for the duration of your stay abroad and contact\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.internationalsos.com\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.internationalsos.com\/\">International SOS<\/a>\u00a0to inquire about whether your medications are legal in your study abroad country.\u00a0 Medications such as Ritalin and Adderall are not legal in every country, for example.<\/li>\n<li>Keep prescriptions in their <strong>original<\/strong>\u00a0packaging\/ containers from the pharmacy.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bring copies<\/strong>\u00a0of your prescriptions including the generic drug names of all medications.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n  <\/div><\/div>\n            \n                      <\/div>\n        <\/li>\n\n          <\/ul>\n  \n  \n\n  <\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":320,"featured_media":0,"parent":0,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-1657","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.1.1 -
