Jelila Adedoyin Surakat in Cape Town, South Africa

Term: Fall 2025
Major: Cinema and Media Studies
Minor: Dance in Entertainment
I have always wanted to study abroad! I did a Maymester previously and craved a deeper, more connected relationship with a new country. The emergence of Amapiano dance and music, and my interest in its connection to Hip-Hop, House, and West African styles of dance, inspired my selection of South Africa as my study abroad destination.

CIEE also has an option for students to receive up to a $1,500 flight credit to study in South Africa, and provides merit and need-based scholarships on their website. You should also apply to the Gilman Scholarship! Keep in mind, though, that the scholarship receives lots of applications, so I recommend taking your time and proofreading it for the best chances of winning.
