Your teacher gave you a frowny face on the spelling test and you must write \u201cincredible\u201d 100 times on the blackboard.<\/p>\n<p>On top of all that, your front tooth is loose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOK everyone, take three deep breaths,\u201d said Tina Koneazny, sitting straight-backed and cross-legged. A group of children with looks of concentration mirrored her movements as they stretched out on yoga mats. All eyes closed, one boy placed his hand over his heart as if reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBreathe in and out,\u201d Koneazny said, her own chest rising and falling. \u201cTry to hear your own breath. Deep breath in. Out. Last one, deep breath in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A long, collective <em>whoooosh<\/em> of air. \u201cGreat job,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>For these students and those at five additional elementary schools near USC, childhood stressors are being soothed with yoga. \u201cLittle Yoginis\u201d is the brainchild of Koneazny, associate director of administration and educational outreach at the Joint Educational Project (JEP), housed in USC Dornsife. The program is part of JEP\u2019s USC Readers<sup>Plus<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>Each week, Koneazny and Readers<sup>Plus<\/sup> tutors visit elementary schools, read children a book and practice yoga imbuing the themes in the literature. For example, they may read aloud <em>Horton Hatches the Egg<\/em> by Dr. Seuss, emphasizing Horton the elephant\u2019s faithfulness and determination to protect an egg nuzzled in a nest perched in a tree.<\/p>\n<p>In that case, the yoga practice began with a breathing technique called \u201cElephant Breath\u201d\u2014 deep cleansing breaths as hands are clasped and arms are swung back and forth like an elephant\u2019s trunk. After warming up with a number of sun salutations, they followed with \u201ctree\u201d pose in honor of Horton\u2019s many months crouched in a tree.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe themes in each book are selected as they align with the guiding principles of yoga,\u201d Koneazny said. \u201cThese are values that provide a moral compass for all human beings to become their best selves. Themes like non-harming, honoring one another, respect for one another, mindfulness, thoughtfulness, kindness. For example, one lesson is built around the theme of harmony and nonviolence. The program is part of JEP\u2019s USC\u00a0Readers<sup>Plus<\/sup><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On this recent day, under the sun\u2019s warmth at Vermont Elementary School, Koneazny held up a book while the children, mostly third-graders, scooted in to hear over the laughter and occasional shriek from the playground.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis book is called <em>One<\/em>,\u201d Koneazny told the children, opening the book. \u201cReady?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Blue is a quiet color. Blue enjoyed looking at the sky floating on the waves. Overall, he liked being Blue, except when he was with Red. Red was a hothead; he liked to pick on Blue. \u2018Red is hot, Blue is not!\u2019 Red would tease Blue.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cRed is evil!\u201d hollered a boy from the group.<\/p>\n<p>In the book, characters named Orange, Green and Purple don\u2019t like what they see, but don\u2019t speak up. Things escalate \u2014 until One comes along and shows all the colors how to stand up and stand together. The students learned about numbers, counting and primary and secondary colors, but also about embracing differences and how it can just take one voice to make a difference.<\/p>\n<p>After reading the book aloud, Koneazny asked the children: \u201cRemember when One arrived in the book and saw that Red was being a bully? Did One shy away or did he stand up to Red?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStand up!\u201d the children chanted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe stood up like an arrow, right?\u201d Koneazny continued. \u201cSo now we\u2019re going to do an arrow pose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Koneazny and Readers<sup>Plus<\/sup> tutors meandered through the group helping students get into the pose properly, adjusting them as needed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDante, very nice,\u201d Koneazny said. \u201cYou got it. It keeps you healthy. It\u2019s good for your bones because it\u2019s almost like exercise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paola went on to explain that yoga gives her energy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s good for your heart. Because when you\u2019re breathing, it keeps your blood flowing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amani Tann, 8, said yoga is healthy because it keeps her more balanced and focused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have to concentrate on one thing and that keeps you focused,\u201d she said. \u201cInstead of looking around you focus on one thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Denise Zarate and Dionne Ramirez, both 8, said yoga makes them happy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re paying attention, calming down and don\u2019t get mad,\u201d Denise said. \u201cIt takes patience and balance. It makes me healthy in my spirit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Annelisha Dixon, one of the Readers<sup>Plus <\/sup>tutors assisting children that day, works with children one-on-one during the school day helping them with reading, and participates in the yoga after school program at Vermont.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYoga is really good to help children reflect on what they\u2019re doing and how they\u2019re behaving,\u201d said Dixon, who is majoring in the USC School of Dramatic Arts and minoring in Spanish in USC Dornsife.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYoga helps them gather their thoughts, which can be hard for children. It focuses them. Reminds them where they are and what they should be doing. So when it\u2019s homework time, they\u2019re a lot more respectful to each other and themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vermont Elementary Principal Brenda Cortez was thrilled with JEP\u2019s Little Yoginis program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey love it,\u201d Cortez said. \u201cI\u2019m just excited that USC can bring this to my children. JEP exposes our students to so many new things. Having the children relax and breathe, especially when we\u2019re approaching CST [California Standards Test] time, is important. Children get anxious. It\u2019s a big test. With this program, they get oxygen into their little bodies and learn to breathe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n  <\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n                                            \n  \n
