f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <p>A USC alumna has donated $15 million in her family\u2019s name to the <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/hist\">Department of History<\/a> at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, the single largest gift to a USC humanities department.<\/p>\n<p>The landmark gift from Elizabeth Van Hunnick follows her donation in 2016 to establish the <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/advancement\/goldgar-installed-as-inaugural-van-hunnick-chair-in-european-hi\/\">Garrett and Anne Van Hunnick Chair in European History<\/a>. Combined, Van Hunnick\u2019s gifts to the department represent one of the largest endowment contributions to any U.S. university history department.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElizabeth Van Hunnick\u2019s generosity to our history department speaks to her passion for the humanities and history scholarship, as well as their importance at a research university like USC,\u201d said USC President Carol L. Folt. \u201cWith this gift, she is ensuring new opportunities for both faculty and students whose scholarship rigorously examines and illuminates the history that shapes our communities and our world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In brief, the gift to USC Dornsife\u2019s Department of History will:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Endow three faculty chairs<\/li>\n<li>Establish a faculty research fund<\/li>\n<li>Create a graduate student fellowship<\/li>\n<li>Name the department the \u201cVan Hunnick History Department\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The three new faculty chairs in the department will be named after Van Hunnick and her late father and sister: the Elizabeth J. Van Hunnick Endowed Chair in History; the Garrett Van Hunnick Endowed Chair in History; and the Wilhelmina Van Hunnick Endowed Chair in History.<\/p>\n<p>The previously established <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/advancement\/goldgar-installed-as-inaugural-van-hunnick-chair-in-european-hi\/\">Garrett and Anne Van Hunnick Endowed Chair in European History<\/a> was named in honor of Elizabeth Van Hunnick\u2019s late parents. It is held by Professor Anne Goldgar, an expert on the social and cultural history of early modern Europe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis landmark gift will not only provide essential support for our researchers to pursue cutting-edge scholarship, it will help the department become a magnet for outstanding new faculty, propelling this already strong department to a position of national preeminence,\u201d said USC Dornsife Dean <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/amber-miller\/\">Amber D. Miller<\/a>. \u201cIt will enable our history department to broaden and deepen our understanding of the past, helping our students and society better address today\u2019s most pressing problems. I\u2019m incredibly grateful to Elizabeth for this extraordinary, transformative gift.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Excellence across time and geography<\/h2>\n<p>Van Hunnick, an alumna of USC Dornsife\u2019s history department and resident of San Diego County, said she hopes her gift will help elevate the department to even greater prominence and support the development of more informed leaders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am encouraged by the fact that we\u2019ll have an outstanding history department, hopefully known nationwide and attracting many prominent scholars,\u201d she said. \u201cThat\u2019s important because you can see what\u2019s happening in the world today; you see leaders and politicians making the same mistakes over and over again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThings could be different,\u201d she said, \u201cif they would just look at history and understand what happened in other cultures and civilizations. You can truly learn a lot from the past.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/cf\/hist\/people\/faculty_display.cfm?Person_ID=1091824\">Jay Rubenstein<\/a>, professor of history, chair of the newly renamed Van Hunnick History Department and director of the USC Dornsife <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/center-for-the-premodern-world\/\">Center for the Premodern World<\/a>, reaffirmed Van Hunnick\u2019s belief, noting that the \u201castonishing\u201d gift will transform the department.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe world has always been a highly interconnected place, and the story of its past is a tangled and serpentine tale,\u201d he said. \u201cTo tell that story properly requires history departments with great geographic and chronological reach. Thanks to this gift, USC Dornsife\u2019s history department can attain that degree of wide-ranging excellence and prepare our undergraduates to face the world with a better grasp of its complexities and challenges than ever before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the endowed chairs, the gift establishes a $2 million faculty research fund and a $1 million graduate student fellowship.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur faculty and graduate students will be able to conduct research at even higher levels of sophistication and ambition than we ever have in the past,\u201d Rubenstein said.<\/p>\n<h2>Teacher and world traveler<\/h2>\n<p>Van Hunnick\u2019s parents, Garrett and Anne, emigrated to the United States from the Netherlands in the 1920s and established a dairy farm business and home in Cypress, California, where their daughters, Elizabeth and Wilhelmina (Willi), were born and grew up.<\/p>\n<p>Unable to pursue higher education due to the demands of their business and lives, the Van Hunnick parents instilled in their daughters the importance of learning. This ethic included university studies and extended to a broader view of the world, something the Van Hunnicks hoped to give their daughters through firsthand experiences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince both my parents were born in the Netherlands, we were raised learning about European culture and history, and we traveled frequently to Europe,\u201d Elizabeth Van Hunnick said.<\/p>\n<p>Her worldly travels continued after she and her sister, who graduated with a degree in business administration from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.usc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USC Marshall School of Business<\/a>, became high school teachers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe went on a big trip every year,\u201d said Van Hunnick. \u201cIt was just so interesting to me. I wanted to go to these places and know about them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Van Hunnick journeyed to dozens of storied locations around the globe, documenting her excursions on film and sharing them in her classroom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was interested in going to centers of ancient cultures,\u201d she said, including Greece, Rome, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. \u201cI took thousands of 35mm slides, and I would show them to my students. Or maybe the term is \u2018bored them,\u2019\u201d she added, laughing, \u201cbut I thought it was valuable to share what I saw and learned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This spirit of seeking broader knowledge led to Van Hunnick\u2019s support of USC Dornsife and the history department.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI agree with the Greeks that in order to be a well-educated person you should study many, many different things,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s not just taking a course to get a job. That\u2019s fine, but it\u2019s important to be, I guess the old-fashioned term is \u2018well-rounded.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/cf\/faculty-and-staff\/faculty.cfm?pid=1003206\">William Deverell<\/a>, professor of history, spatial sciences and environmental studies and director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/icw\">Huntington-USC Institute on California and the West<\/a>, has known Van Hunnick for years through a mutual interest in the history of Southern California. He shares Van Hunnick\u2019s enthusiasm for a broader education and said her gift will \u201creverberate widely across the academy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis remarkable gift shows faith in the university, in USC Dornsife, in the department and in the discipline,\u201d Deverell said, \u201cand it will pay intellectual and pedagogical dividends for decades to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For history department chair Rubenstein, the gift is nothing short of historic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis moment is \u2014 and as a historian, I don\u2019t use this term lightly \u2014 a
