f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <p>\u201cHow do millennials engage with parks and green spaces? And, how can we incentivize them to support park policy measures? We seek to answer those questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Liz Schaeffer, a senior studying political science and sociology, addressed a room of her peers and members of the issues advocacy firm <a href=\"http:\/\/wearerally.com\/\">RALLY<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.caparksnow.com\/#landing\">Parks Now<\/a>, a coalition of civic leaders who seek to improve access to California\u2019s parks for urban communities.<\/p>\n<p>Schaeffer and a team of four other students conducted research for Parks Now as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/unruh\/internships\/\">California Policy Research Internship<\/a>, a semester-long course offered through the Unruh Institute of Politics at USC Dornsife. A second group of interns conducted research on behalf of <a href=\"http:\/\/greendot.org\/\">Green Dot Public Schools<\/a> and the public strategy firm <a href=\"http:\/\/www.calstrat.com\/\">California Strategies<\/a> to help them determine ways to recruit and retain quality teachers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Real-world recommendations from the students<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Shaeffer and her team\u2019s presentation on Dec. 4 marked the culmination of their work, which included crafting and conducting a survey of more than 200 millennials \u2014 whom they define as anyone between ages 18 and 35 as of 2015 \u2014 interviewing policy experts and thought leaders, and analyzing academic and policy reports.<\/p>\n<p>They took the audience through the findings from their research and presented their policy recommendations. Among their suggestions were that Parks Now should consider expanding their coalition, cater park development to community preferences and focus on low-income neighborhoods to balance equity. They like to get their information online, but we don\u2019t want to stop and have that information end online. We want them to continue to go out and support policy measures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She suggested leveraging the power of social media. As an example, the group presented a Buzzfeed-style list with \u201c10 Things You Didn\u2019t Know About Parks\u201d that included eye-opening facts about the economic, social and health benefits created by parks. Typical of the genre, the list was punctuated with humorous animated images.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat will help get the message to resonate with my generation,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Developing a force for leading positive change<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/cf\/faculty-and-staff\/faculty.cfm?pid=1023575\">Dan Schnur<\/a>, who directs the Unruh Institute, noted in his closing remarks that the research internship was created roughly five years ago as a way for students to partner with change agents in California to confront and find solutions to real-world challenges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe people who run USC believe strongly in all of you,\u201d he told the students. \u201cIt\u2019s not just enough to read about these problems, or listen to old people talk at you about them. Photo courtesy of the Unruh Institute.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Schnur noted that the internship was also an opportunity to showcase students\u2019 capabilities to the partners such as RALLY and Parks Now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of you have heard me say this before, but for better or worse, anyone can put together an amazing resume. The real challenge is figuring out who the amazing person is behind the amazing resume. You go through a project like this one and they don\u2019t have to guess any more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/cf\/faculty-and-staff\/faculty.cfm?pid=1005904\">Art Auerbach<\/a>, assistant professor (teaching) of political science, taught the course. He said that he was impressed with the students\u2019 work and their evolution throughout the semester.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s great is that they really become experts in the particular policy area that they\u2019re looking at,\u201d Auerbach said. \u201cWhether it\u2019s for Green Dot and education retention issues, or in this case proliferation of parks in underserved communities, their work really demonstrates their ability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Education through participation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Adrian Johnson, who researched the topic of park access and millennial engagement in policy measures for green spaces, is studying economics. Because of his academic focus, he wanted to gain insight into what goes into developing policy and how you get people to support it. He said that he not only gained research experience but the internship gave him the opportunity to get involved with issues advocacy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI took this class to take initiative and get involved in some way, shape or form,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cYou have to educate yourself to inform others. That was one of the reasons I was interested in this project.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pooyan Jamneshan, who studies <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/videos\/programs\/545\/philosophy-politics-and-law\/\">philosophy, politics and law<\/a>, said he\u2019s much more adept at research, writing and team work as a result of the internship. Plus, he said, \u201cas a millennial, it\u2019s an issue that\u2019s close to us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alfredo Gonzalez, who works with the Parks Now coalition, attended the presentation. He said that the interns provided thoughtful insight into creative ways to include millennials in the conversation about the future of California\u2019s parks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was extremely valuable to have young, bright students analyze real-life policy issues and provide innovative solutions,\u201d Gonzalez said. \u201cI was particularly impressed with their technological savvy, and I thought that their suggested approaches for engaging more young adults via social media are strategies Parks Now should pursue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n
