f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <p>People who experienced high anxiety any time in their lives had a 48 percent higher risk of developing dementia compared to those who had not, according to a new study led by USC researchers.<\/p>\n<p>The findings were based on an examination of 28 years of data from the Swedish Adoption Twin Study of Aging, overseen by the Karolinska Institutet of Sweden. The study sample involved 1,082 participants \u2014 twins, fraternal and identical \u2014 who completed in-person tests every three years, answered several questionnaires and were screened for dementia throughout the study.<\/p>\n<p>Many other studies have explored the link between dementia and psychological variables such as depression and neuroticism. However, this study established that the anxiety-dementia link was independent of the role of depression as a risk factor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnxiety, especially in older adults, has been relatively understudied compared to depression,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/cf\/psyc\/psyc_staff_display.cfm?Person_ID=1009280\">Andrew Petkus<\/a>, the study\u2019s lead author and postdoctoral research associate in <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/psyc\/\">psychology<\/a> at USC Dornsife. \u201cDepression seems more evident in adulthood, but it\u2019s usually episodic. Anxiety, though, tends to be a chronic lifelong problem, and that\u2019s why people tend to write off anxiety as part of someone\u2019s personality.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/migration-uploads\/Anxiety2-2238.jpg\" alt=\"Portrait of Andrew Petkus\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Andrew Petkus, postdoctoral researcher in psychology at USC Dornsife.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A final draft of the study was made available online last week in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alzheimersanddementia.com\/\"><em>Alzheimer\u2019s &amp; Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer\u2019s Association<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers noted that the subjects had self-reported various levels of anxiety, which may or may not meet the clinical diagnostic threshold of a psychiatric anxiety disorder. Even so, the twin who developed dementia had a history of higher levels of anxiety compared to the twin who did not develop dementia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How anxious?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The subjects with anxiety who later developed dementia \u201care people that experience more than usual symptoms of anxiety,\u201d said study co-author <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/cf\/faculty-and-staff\/faculty.cfm?pid=1003273\">Margaret Gatz<\/a>, professor of psychology. \u201cThey are people who you would say operate at a \u2018high level of anxiety.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are frantic, frazzled people,\u201d added Gatz, who also holds joint appointments in the <a href=\"http:\/\/gero.usc.edu\/\">USC Davis School of Gerontology<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.keck.usc.edu\/\">Keck School of Medicine of USC<\/a> and is a foreign adjunct professor for the Karolinska Insitutet.<\/p>\n<p>To determine whether anxiety levels correlated to dementia risk, researchers compared those who reported high anxiety with those who reported lower anxiety levels. \u201cThose in the high anxiety group were about 1.5 times more likely to develop dementia,\u201d Petkus said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Possible explanation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>People who have high levels of anxiety tend to have higher levels of stress hormones, including cortisol, according to Petkus. Evidence shows that chronically high levels of cortisol damage parts of the brain such as the hippocampus, which stores memory, and the frontal cortex, which is responsible for high-level thinking.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers also found that the anxiety-dementia relationship was stronger among fraternal twins of whom only one developed dementia than it was among identical twins. The researchers said this finding indicates that there may be genetic factors shared by anxiety and dementia that account for the anxiety-dementia risk.<\/p>\n<p>The USC team also hopes to determine whether individuals who have been treated for anxiety earlier in their lives show lower risk of dementia compared with those whose anxiety was not treated.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The research team<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Other study co-authors were: Chandra Reynolds of UC Riverside; Julie Loebach Wetherell of the VA San Diego Healthcare System and UC San Diego; William Kremen of UC San Diego and and the VA Center of Excellence for Stress and Mental Health; and Nancy Pedersen of the Karolinska Institutet and an adjunct professor of psychology at USC Dornsife.<\/p>\n<p>Petkus received support from the Ruth L.
