f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <p>More than 800,000 Los Angeles County households\u00a0\u2014\u00a0nearly a quarter of the total (24%)\u00a0\u2014\u00a0experienced food insecurity over the 12 months ending July 2022, up from 17% in 2021. This follows a sharp drop from 34% in 2020, according to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/publicexchange.usc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/USC-Food-Insecurity-Research-Brief_September-2022.pdf\">new study<\/a>\u00a0released by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/publicexchange.usc.edu\/\">Public Exchange<\/a>\u00a0at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences and funded by the National Science Foundation. The research team included faculty from the Keck School of Medicine of USC, USC Dornsife Spatial Sciences Institute and USC Price School of Public Policy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny notion that we\u2019re largely \u2018out of the woods\u2019 with regard to the problem of hunger in Los Angeles is sadly off base,\u201d said\u00a0lead researcher Kayla de la Haye,\u00a0associate professor of population and public health sciences at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/keck.usc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Keck School of Medicine of USC<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cSome of the Angelenos most impacted are Latinos, young adults and families with kids.\u201d<br \/>\n<figure style=\"width: 2250px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/migration-uploads\/Food_Insecurity_Graphic_10-13-3774.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/migration-uploads\/Food_Insecurity_Graphic_10-13-3774.jpg\" width=\"2250\" height=\"2251\" class=\"size-thumbnail\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The number of Los Angeles County households facing food insecurity dropped by half from 2020 to 2021 but rose again sharply this year. For the previous three years, average rates of food insecurity for the nation and California have remained\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ers.usda.gov\/webdocs\/publications\/104656\/err-309.pdf?v=2739.7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">steady at 10 \u2013 11%<\/a>, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. National and statewide data for this year aren\u2019t yet available.<\/p>\n<p>Food insecurity is defined as a disruption in regular eating because of limited money or other resources.<\/p>\n<p>De la Haye believes inflation is a significant factor contributing to the growing number of Angelenos struggling to afford food. Food prices nationally have gone up 9% in 2022, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. More than 4 out of 10 study participants in L.A. County said they bought less food this year because of the rise of food and grocery prices, while 38% said that to save money, they bought foods that were lesser in quality.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About the Study<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The study participants are from the\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/uasdata.usc.edu\/index.php\" href=\"https:\/\/uasdata.usc.edu\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Understanding America Study<\/a>\u00a0(UAS), a probability-based internet panel administered in English and Spanish by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cesr.usc.edu\/\">USC Dornsife Center for Economic and Social Research<\/a>. The study sample is representative of all L.A. County households and the weighted sample size ranged from 1,135 \u2013 1,176 participants (18 years or older).
