f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <p>It\u2019s 2003, and World War II veteran Ernie Sanchez is watching the American-led invasion of Iraq on television when he suddenly starts shaking and sobbing uncontrollably. Later, through therapy, he learns that what he experienced is PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) and that his symptoms reveal his deeply repressed memories of having killed between 50 and 100 Germans during the war. As part of his healing, he now speaks of those dead Germans as sons and brothers, people who were loved by their families, thereby humanizing them.<\/p>\n<p>This moving anecdote is one of many contained in <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.guyslikemebook.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guys Like Me: Five Wars, Five Veterans for Peace<\/a><\/i> (Rutgers University Press, 2018) by <a href=\"https:\/\/pressroom.usc.edu\/michael-a-messner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Messner<\/a>, professor of sociology and gender studies at USC Dornsife. Published to coincide with the centennial of Armistice Day on November 11, the book tells the stories of five veterans from World War II through the Iraq War. All have dealt with the trauma of war and all have become lifelong peace advocates.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/migration-uploads\/MessnerGrandfather_P-1_2ndry_225x350-2884.jpg\" alt=\"Black and white photo of Michael Messner's grandfather in military uniform.\" width=\"225\" height=\"350\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Michael Messner\u2019s grandfather, Private Russell Messner, pictured here in 1918. Photo courtesy of Michael Messner.<\/p>\n<p>Their stories contain their paths to reconciliation with former enemies and to their own personal healing from trauma and from what Messner calls \u201cthe deep moral injury\u201d they carry from having killed other people, sometimes in great numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Their life stories are bookended by a prologue focusing on Messner\u2019s grandfather, Russell Messner, a proud World War I vet, and a final vignette from Santa Fe, New Mexico, where members of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veteransforpeace.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Veterans for Peace<\/a> march in a Veterans Day parade behind a banner reading \u201cObserve Armistice Day; Wage Peace.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>A commitment to peace<\/h2>\n<p>Michael Messner\u2019s writing of <i>Guys Like Me<\/i> was triggered by his grandfather\u2019s unexpected reaction when Messner wished him \u201cHappy Veterans Day,\u201d 35 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not Veterans Day, it\u2019s Armistice Day,\u201d his grandfather angrily retorted. \u201cThose damn politicians went and changed it to Veterans Day so that they could keep having more wars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Armistice Day \u2014 the commemoration of the truce that brought the end of WWI \u2014 became Veterans Day in 1954 in the aftermath of WWII and the Korean War. The reason, said President Dwight Eisenhower at the time, was to honor veterans of all wars, not just WWI.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut to my grandfather and other World War I vets, that change symbolized for them a betrayal of what they felt was the promise of Armistice Day \u2014 not just the end of their war, but the end of all wars, and a commitment to peace,\u201d Messner said. He elaborated on this in a <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/veterans-have-fought-in-wars-and-fought-against-them-99966\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent article<\/a> published in <em>The Conversation<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t until many years after his grandfather&#8217;s angry outburst that Messner realized that his grandfather wasn\u2019t unique: Many veterans of World War I and other wars were, and are, staunch advocates for peace.<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mSxSKAI7om0\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Meetings with members of organizations like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vvaw.org\/\">Vietnam Veterans Against the War<\/a>, Veterans for Peace and <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/aboutfaceveterans.org\/\">About Face: Veterans Against the War<\/a> spurred Messner to focus his research on their experiences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the reasons I wrote <i>Guys Like Me<\/i> was because I wanted to make these veterans\u2019 voices and stories more visible to the American public,\u201d he said. \u201cI think this is a particularly important time for their voices to be heard, especially in light of our government\u2019s efforts to radically increase our already huge military budget, as they continue drone warfare and military occupations in Afghanistan and elsewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The road to finding that voice and being able to discuss their trauma is often long and hard for war veterans, Messner notes. Many have to fight their way through societal expectations that men should deal with pain and traumatic experiences by maintaining a manly silence. Therapy helps some to open up \u2014 but for others it takes a failed suicide attempt.<\/p>\n<p>Those who do find their voice often engage in helping other vets \u2014 a service to others, Messner says, that meshes with that personal healing and also with advocacy for peace.<\/p>\n<h2><i>Guys Like Me<\/i><\/h2>\n<p>Russell Messner also unwittingly supplied the book\u2019s title: Michael Messner remembers his grandfather saying, \u201cGuys like me get sent to war. It\u2019s not those politicians who are fighting the wars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/migration-uploads\/MessnerArmistice_2ndry_Cover-2884.jpg\" alt=\"Image of &quot;Guys Like Me&quot; book cover\" width=\"225\" height=\"350\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Michael Messner tells the stories of five veterans who are all peace advocates.<\/p>\n<p>An echo of his grandfather\u2019s words can be found in the book\u2019s final chapter where Messner describes an encounter at the weekly peace vigil in Santa Fe between a young man who thanks a group of older Veterans for Peace members for their service.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn 81-year-old former Marine responds, saying, \u2018You thanked us for our service. That was very nice of you. But you should know that the things we did when we were in the military, we did because we were told to.
