f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <p>Everyone loves a good love story.<\/p>\n<p>In honor of Valentine\u2019s Day, leading scholar <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/profile\/david-st-john\/\">David St. John<\/a>, University Professor and professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/engl\/\">English<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/colt\/\">comparative literature<\/a>, presents his top five personal favorites. A Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets (he is the author of 11 collections of poetry), St. John has also written libretti for the opera and for choral symphony.<\/p>\n<p>Here, he ranks his five favorite books about romantic love \u2014 four novels and one collection of letters \u2014 that together span 136 years. Notably, St. John\u2019s top choice goes to a novel first published nearly 150 years ago \u2014 further proof (if more were needed), that love stories are truly eternal.<\/p>\n<h2>1. <i>Anna Karenina<\/i> (1878) by Leo Tolstoy.<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cI love its extravagant passions set against a landscape of social censure and political change. It\u2019s also a book that understands the prismatic aspects of romantic love, as well as its wildness and its domesticity.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 202px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/migration-uploads\/secondary225x350-2950.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of David St. John\" width=\"202\" height=\"314\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">David St. John. For 30 years Stieglitz and O\u2019Keeffe exchanged more than 5,000 letters. It\u2019s the passionate and intellectual intimacy here, framed by the daily practice of art, that I treasure.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>3. <i>The Heat of the Day<\/i> (1948) by Elizabeth Bowen.<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cBowen\u2019s novels reflect the damage of secrecy and lies in the lives and love affairs of her characters. The psychological acuity of her work is never more poignant than when she writes of adolescent anxiety and desire.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>4. <i>Women in Love <\/i>(1920) by D. H. Lawrence.<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cLawrence\u2019s second novel featuring the extraordinary Brangwen sisters, Gudrun and Ursula, as they negotiate their redefinitions of what love might be in early 20th-century England. In this novel, Lawrence\u2019s idea of a relationship being a constantly reinvented dialectic between individuals (\u2018twin polar stars,\u2019 he says) is most complexly embodied.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>5. <i>Next Life Might Be Kinder<\/i> (2014) by Howard Norman.<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cNorman\u2019s novel concerns a man whose wife, after her murder, begins to return to him. Is it a haunting or a manifestation of the speaker\u2019s grief?
