f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <p>A student-designed structure is throwing shade near L.A.\u2019s World Cup matches \u2014 but in a good way.<\/p>\n<p>First showcased on June 12 at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metro.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Los Angeles Metro<\/a>\u2019s Downtown-Inglewood station during L.A.\u2019s opening World Cup match, the build takes a concept by USC students and puts it to real-world use. The simple framework topped with a hexagonal roof shows how temporary, portable infrastructure could provide more shade for transit riders and pedestrians, and help L.A. <a href=\"https:\/\/law.ucla.edu\/news\/reducing-outdoor-vulnerability-extreme-heat-los-angeles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">adapt to rising temperatures<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Soccer fans and thousands of Exposition Park visitors can now view the structure in front of the California African American Museum. Its prominent location and proximity to the L.A. Memorial Coliseum gave attendees of this weekend\u2019s FIFA Fan Festival a unique opportunity to engage with the installation as part of their overall match day experience at Expo Park.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis project represents the very best of what higher education can do when student creativity, partnerships with private and public-sector agencies, and community needs come together,\u201d said USC Associate Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.usc.edu\/innomat\/about\/group\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bhavna Sharma<\/a>, Director of Chase L. Made of wood and designed to fit a sidewalk or fill a plaza, it features an intricate lattice covering that provides shade for guests standing or sitting beneath it.<\/p>\n<p>Amid full-time classes and the demands of finals and other student projects, Hinman and Landi spent three months working alongside a team of engineering, architecture, and construction professionals from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aruplab.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arup<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.som.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Skidmore, Owings &amp; Merrill<\/a> (SOM), and advised by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mattconstruction.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MATT Construction<\/a> to build the structure.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/www.autodesk.com\/__;!!LIr3w8kk_Xxm!pAR8c1aKdWhHXq43dB3E7OJZBZf-ueAfi7m0OANrDIW4YUDY9L9JJrD8ohrMbSmBlfJTLIA7vxaeTRaU5_-LUx3pLw$\">Autodesk<\/a>, the project&#8217;s leading supporter, gave the students access to Autodesk Forma to bring their ideas to life and donated the funds to construct the winning design.<\/p>\n<p>Fifty student teams from throughout L.A. submitted entries to the 2025 Shade Zones Design Competition, which called for designs for shade systems that can be built quickly and easily, and moved across a variety of public settings.<\/p>\n<p>The 2026 competition gets underway this fall and will engage students in designing permanent structures for the <a href=\"https:\/\/streets.lacity.gov\/services\/public-right-of-way\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">public right-of-way<\/a> across L.A. County. The competition plans to return for a third round in 2027.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Shade Zones Build was so different from anything I had done before,\u201d Hinman said. \u201cThe hard deadline pushed everyone involved to make thoughtful decisions at every step, which I think was a blessing in disguise. It kept us on track and helped maintain a cohesive theme throughout the entire design process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Landi said he appreciated the project\u2019s demands. \u201cIt forced us to continue iterating on our design, working closely with structural engineers and designers to ensure that the project could be transformed from an idea to a tangible reality. I learned so much about how to negotiate real-world constraints and consider all aspects of the design process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shade Zones \u2014 a collaboration among Sharma, USC School of Architecture, and <a href=\"https:\/\/public-exchange.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USC Dornsife Public Exchange<\/a> \u2014 is part of the broader <a href=\"https:\/\/shade-la.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ShadeLA coalition<\/a>.
