f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <p>Edoardo Ponti has spent decades behind the camera directing some of the film industry\u2019s most celebrated actors to create award-winning motion pictures. On May 12, he\u2019ll draw on his talents and experience to inspire the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences graduating Class of 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Ponti will deliver his commencement addresses to more than 2,000 students and their loved ones at USC Dornsife\u2019s two\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/commencement\/\">graduation ceremonies<\/a>, following the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/commencement.usc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">main USC commencement<\/a>\u00a0ceremony.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/news\/stories\/2265\/subsidize-the-truth-about-you\/\">Ponti<\/a>\u00a0graduated from USC Dornsife in 1994 with a bachelor\u2019s degree in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/engl\/english-major\/\">creative writing<\/a>\u00a0and four years later earned a master\u2019s in film from the USC School of Cinematic Arts. He currently serves on USC Dornsife\u2019s Board of Councilors, a group that provides counsel to USC Dornsife Dean Amber D. We couldn\u2019t be more proud to have him as a USC Dornsife alum and commencement speaker,\u201d Miller said.<\/p>\n<p>The son of actress Sophia Loren and the late producer Carlo Ponti Sr., Edoardo Ponti has written and directed several films \u2014 including\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt3032274\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Voce Humana<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(<em>Human Voice<\/em>) in 2014,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt2186370\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Nightshift Belongs to the Stars<\/em><\/a>\u00a0in 2012 and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0289668\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Between Strangers<\/em><\/a>\u00a0in 2002 \u2014 that have been screened and honored at some of the most prestigious film festivals, including those in Cannes, Venice, Tribeca and Toronto. In addition to his film work, he has written, produced and directed several stage plays as well as an opera.<\/p>\n<p>Most recently, Ponti directed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt10627584\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Life Ahead<\/em><\/a>, based on Romain Gary\u2019s novel\u00a0<em>The Life Before Us<\/em>. The Golden Globe- and Oscar-nominated film is one of Netflix\u2019s most successful international motion pictures, ranking among their top 10 list of most viewed titles in 37 countries.<\/p>\n<p>Ponti credits much of the inspiration behind his filmmaking prowess to his education at USC Dornsife, where he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/news\/stories\/2265\/subsidize-the-truth-about-you\/\">made poetry the focus<\/a>\u00a0of his studies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe core of my films is the human authenticity of the characters in the stories I tell,\u201d he said \u201cI felt that the best way to serve my craft was to dive deeply into the human granularity that poetry brings. Poetry is about getting at the core of things. It\u2019s about the universe of the detail but also about rhythm. And film is also about rhythm, detail and finding the essence in every moment. To this day, writing poetry remains an inextricable part of my filmmaking process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ponti added that his USC Dornsife studies also taught him how not to wait for inspiration, but to tap into it at will. He\u2019ll impart lessons like this to the graduates as he addresses them at the newly named Allyson Felix Field on the University Park Campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCommencement is an emotional and
