f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <p>While <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/lgbt-pride-month\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pride Month<\/a> was founded to commemorate the June 1969 Stonewall riots in New York City, the roots of the gay rights movement reach back at least two years prior and extend 3,000 miles west, to the Los Angeles neighborhood of Silverlake. There, at The Black Cat bar, one of the first protests against police harassment of LGBTQ people took place in 1967, marking USC\u2019s home of L.A. as an early point of ignition in the movement for equality.<\/p>\n<p>To celebrate Pride Month, USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences faculty recommend books written by LGBTQ people or that discuss the LGBTQ community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not only crucial to study the \u2018history\u2019 of the LGBTQ community more broadly, but also to understand how the queer and trans of color origins of our political resistance and emergence are absorbed into\u00a0mainstream, \u2018whitewashed\u2019 histories of the movement,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/cf\/faculty-and-staff\/faculty.cfm?pid=1008230\">Karen Tongson<\/a>, professor of English, American studies and ethnicity and gender and sexuality studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n  <\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n  \n    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div\n  class=\"cc--component-container cc--rich-text \"\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  >\n  <div class=\"c--component c--rich-text\"\n    \n      >\n\n    \n      \n<div class=\"f--field f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <p><a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/cf\/faculty-and-staff\/faculty.cfm?pid=1010317\"><strong>Christopher Freeman<\/strong><\/a><strong>, professor (teaching) of English. <\/strong>Freeman\u2019s research concentrates on gay and lesbian studies of the 20th century. He is working on a book project about the life and work of gay writer Paul Monette.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndbooks.com\/book\/berlin-stories\/#\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"height: 200px;\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/migration-uploads\/Berlin_Stories-3239.jpg\" alt=\"Cover of The Berlin Stories by Christopher Isherwood\" style=\"height: 200px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndbooks.com\/book\/berlin-stories\/#\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Berlin Stories<\/em><\/a> (New Directions, 1945) by Christopher Isherwood<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s most known for his <em>Berlin Stories<\/em>, which were adapted into the musical and film <em>Cabaret<\/em>. That work is timely as it documents the rise of the Nazis in the Weimar era in Germany.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\">\n    <a href=\"https:\/\/us.macmillan.com\/books\/9780374535223\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"height: 200px;\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/migration-uploads\/Christopher_and_His_Kind-3239.jpg\" alt=\"Cover of Christopher and His Kind by Christopher Isherwood\" style=\"height: 200px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/us.macmillan.com\/books\/9780374535223\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Christopher and His Kind<\/em><\/a> (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1976) by Christopher Isherwood<\/p>\n<p>    \u201cIsherwood\u2019s mid-1970s nonfiction retelling of his life during the 1930s in Germany and around Europe is candid, a breezy read and historically fascinating. And for a second Isherwood work, his classic novel <a href=\"https:\/\/us.macmillan.com\/books\/9780374533878\"><em>A Single Man<\/em><\/a> (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1964) follows a gay man through his day in early 1960s Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p>    \u201cYou can skip Tom Ford\u2019s adaptation of it, though.\u201d\n<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n  <\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n  \n    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div\n  class=\"cc--component-container cc--rich-text \"\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  >\n  <div class=\"c--component c--rich-text\"\n    \n      >\n\n    \n      \n<div class=\"f--field f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <p><a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/cf\/faculty-and-staff\/faculty.cfm?pid=1008230\"><strong>Karen Tongson<\/strong><\/a><strong>, professor of English, gender and sexuality studies, and American studies and ethnicity.<\/strong> Tongson\u2019s research includes queer and gender studies, and popular culture.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\">\n    \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/read.dukeupress.edu\/glq\/article\/3\/4\/437\/9940\/Punks-Bulldaggers-and-Welfare-Queens-The-Radical\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Punks, Bulldaggers, and Welfare Queens: The Radical Potential of Queer Politics?\u201d<\/a> (<em>GLQ<\/em>, Duke University Press, 1997) by Cathy Cohen<\/p>\n<p>    \u201cEssential reading for anyone who wants to comprehend the promises and problems within certain coalitional approaches to LGBTQ, politics, scholarship and organizing. For non-academic audiences, it demonstrates how one undertakes an intersectional analysis of power, even as it explores more complex arguments within LGBTQ studies about the field\u2019s relationship to academic institutions, and the political limits of remaining bound to that framework. Though (spoiler alert) Cohen herself apologizes for not providing concrete solutions \u2018toward a transformational coalition politics,\u2019 the essay, and the important questions it raises, paves the way for movements like Black Lives Matter, which is led and founded by queer\/women of color, Patrisse Cullors-Brignac, Alicia Garza and Opal Tometi, who bring their experiences organizing across and within their various communities to bear in their important work, much as Cohen\u2019s essay hoped would be possible.\u201d\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\">\n    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simonandschuster.com\/books\/How-We-Fight-for-Our-Lives\/Saeed-Jones\/9781501132735\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"height: 200px;\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/migration-uploads\/How_We_Fight_For_Our_Lives-3239.jpg\" alt=\"Cover of How We Fight for Our Lives: A Memoir by Saeed Jones \" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.simonandschuster.com\/books\/How-We-Fight-for-Our-Lives\/Saeed-Jones\/9781501132735\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How We Fight for Our Lives: A Memoir<\/a><\/em> (Simon &amp; Schuster, 2019) by Saeed Jones<\/p>\n<p>    \u201cAs important as it is to understand our collective past, it\u2019s also vital for us to remain connected to stories forged in our contemporary moment, that share with us what it\u2019s like to have experienced the last 20 or so years in America as a young, queer person of color. Saeed Jones, who is also a poet and journalist, has written this beautiful, award-winning memoir in a style that is, at once, down-to-earth and soaringly lyrical. Jones writes about coming of age as a young, Black, gay person in the south with the kind of raw honesty and searing observation that will make you laugh, fall apart, feel alone, feel close.\u201d\n<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n  <\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n  \n    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div\n  class=\"cc--component-container cc--rich-text \"\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  >\n  <div class=\"c--component c--rich-text\"\n    \n      >\n\n    \n      \n<div class=\"f--field f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <p><a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/cf\/faculty-and-staff\/faculty.cfm?pid=1003117\"><strong>Joseph Boone<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> <strong>Gender Studies Professor in Media and Gender and professor of English, comparative literature and gender studies.<\/strong> Boone\u2019s research centers on the novel as genre, narrative theory, modernism and queer studies.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear:both;\">\n    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/297926\/the-night-watch-by-sarah-waters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"height: 200px;\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/migration-uploads\/The_Night_Watch-3239.jpg\" alt=\"Cover of The Night Watch by Sarah Waters\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/297926\/the-night-watch-by-sarah-waters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Night Watch<\/em><\/a> (Riverhead Books, 2006) by Sarah Waters<\/p>\n<p>    \u201cIt\u2019s set in London during World War II and one major plot involves lesbian women who run the ambulances, etc., during the blitz; another, a gay youth who\u2019s a pacifist. Toklas have hired. So interesting. An intersection of colonist\/gay\/expatriate themes.
