their city spending money to plant and maintain trees in neighborhoods with little shade, but support varies across demographics and is lowest among Black Angelenos, who are least likely to live in well-shaded neighborhoods.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n              <li><p>Bus riders have little relief from the sun: Only a quarter of Angelenos say their neighborhood stop has enough shade.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n c--rich-text\"\n    \n      >\n\n    \n      \n<div class=\"f--field f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <p>While most Angelenos live on streets with little to no shade, nearly half <em>believe <\/em>their neighborhoods have enough tree cover. That striking gap between what residents experience and what the science says is enough shade is one of the key findings from a new <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/cesr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/54\/2025\/11\/LABarometer_ShadeReport_FINAL.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LABarometer report<\/a> on shade in Los Angeles County.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/cesr\/\">Center for Economic and Social Research<\/a> (CESR) at the USC Dornsife Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences produced the report.<\/p>\n<p>Only 16% of L.A. County residents surveyed live in areas with moderate or high levels of tree shade, yet 48% said their block has enough coverage to stay comfortable on a hot day. That mismatch has real consequences, researchers say, especially as climate change intensifies the urban <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/heatislands\">heat island effect<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe shade \u2018perception gap\u2019 may stem from how people experience their surroundings \u2014 and what they\u2019ve grown used to,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/news\/stories\/labarometer-fifth-anniversary-kyla-thomas\/\">Kyla Thomas<\/a>, a sociologist at USC Dornsife and <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/cesr\/labarometer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LABarometer<\/a> director.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019ve lived in a neighborhood with few trees your whole life, that environment becomes your norm and you adapt,\u201d she said. \u201cYou might not realize what\u2019s missing until you visit a shadier, cooler part of the city. The findings help illustrate why cross-agency coordination will be essential in preparing the city for a hotter future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClimate change will make hot days even hotter in L.A. County, and residents who feel comfortable now may want more shade in the decades to come,\u201d said Rita Kampalath, the county\u2019s chief sustainability officer. \u201cThrough our Community Forest Management Plan and partnership with ShadeLA, L.A. County is working to promote the long-term benefits of trees and to expand tree canopy where it\u2019s needed most \u2014 not just for today, but for a resilient future as temperatures continue to rise.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Support for greening: strong, but uneven<\/h2>\n<p>There is broad public support for planting trees: More than 8 in 10 Angelenos said they favor local government spending to add trees, with one-third strongly in favor. But that support isn\u2019t evenly distributed \u2014 and it\u2019s weakest in the very communities with the least shade.<\/p>\n<p>Black residents, for instance, are more likely than most other groups to live in low-shade neighborhoods, yet they were nearly three times less likely than white residents to strongly support government funding to plant new trees. And though more than three-quarters expressed some level of support, nearly a quarter were somewhat or strongly opposed to public spending on trees \u2014 the highest of any racial group.<\/p>\n<p>A researcher with Public Exchange\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/news\/stories\/public-exchange-plan-to-double-eastside-shade\/\">Urban Trees Initiative<\/a> says this disparity may stem from a legacy of systemic disinvestment and competing community needs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn places like South L.A., where residents have faced decades of underinvestment in housing, health care and other critical services, tree planting can spark mixed emotions,\u201d said Santina Contreras, assistant professor of urban planning and spatial analysis at the <a href=\"https:\/\/priceschool.usc.edu\/\">USC Price School of Public Policy<\/a>. \u201cPeople value green space, but they\u2019ve seen well-intentioned projects ignore local voices and often associate tree planting with gentrification.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Support for spending on tree planting also dipped among residents with lower levels of education and among Republicans and independents.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2025\/11\/labarometer-112025-tree-planting-support.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-25914 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2025\/11\/labarometer-112025-tree-planting-support.jpg\" alt=\"Bar chart displays level of support of different L.A. demographic groups\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1132\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2025\/11\/labarometer-112025-tree-planting-support.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2025\/11\/labarometer-112025-tree-planting-support-500x524.jpg 500w, https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2025\/11\/labarometer-112025-tree-planting-support-977x1024.jpg 977w, https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2025\/11\/labarometer-112025-tree-planting-support-768x805.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Transit stops are shade deserts<\/h2>\n<p>Public transit riders are also feeling the heat. Just 23% of Angelenos said their nearest bus stop has adequate shade \u2014 closely mirroring findings from UCLA researchers, who reported that only a quarter of L.A. Metro bus stops are shaded.<\/p>\n<p>That lack of shelter poses serious health risks, particularly for those in lower-income communities where public transit use is highest and heat exposure is more prolonged.<\/p>\n<p>ShadeLA is already prioritizing bus stops and other high-traffic areas for new shade interventions \u2014 part of its mission to create a cooler, healthier Los Angeles before the 2028 Olympics.<\/p>\n<h2>About the LABarometer survey<\/h2>\n<p>The LABarometer shade survey was conducted in both English and Spanish between February and April 2025. It is based on a representative sample of more than 1,500 adult residents across L.A. County.
