County residents sheltered indoors last year to avoid wildfire smoke, and one in three reported psychological distress from a natural disaster.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n              <li><p>Metro Rail use increased slightly while bus ridership remained flat at 70% of pre-COVID-19 pandemic levels.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n              <li><p>Nearly 40% of Angelenos say L.A.\u2019s public transit system is \u201cnot at all prepared\u201d for the 2028 Olympics.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n              <li><p>Just over half of residents expect their next car to be electric or hybrid \u2014 down from 57% in 2024.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n          <\/ul>\n  <\/div>\n  \n\n  <\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n  \n    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div\n  class=\"cc--component-container cc--rich-text \"\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  >\n  <div class=\"c--component c--rich-text\"\n    \n      >\n\n    \n      \n<div class=\"f--field f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <p>On the heels of destructive wildfires and as the 2028 Olympics approach, Angelenos are juggling climate anxiety and infrastructure concerns \u2014 with a few bright spots \u2014 according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/cesr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/54\/2025\/06\/MobSus_TrackingReport_W5.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new LABarometer survey<\/a> on mobility and sustainability.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/cesr\/\">Center for Economic and Social Research<\/a> (CESR) at the USC College of Letters, Arts and Sciences conducted the survey between February and April 2025, shortly after the January wildfires.<\/p>\n<h2>Wildfires are a part of life in L.A.<\/h2>\n<p>Following the wildfires that burned nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fire.ca.gov\/incidents\/2025\">40,000 acres<\/a> in Los Angeles\u2019 Pacific Palisades and Altadena neighborhoods, researchers found that more than half of Angelenos avoided going outside in the last year to avoid smoke from a wildfire. Nearly a third of residents reported symptoms of psychological distress from a natural disaster, up from 26% following the 2023 fire season and 28% in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese patterns indicate that even a fire as catastrophic as the one we just experienced is no longer unusual in terms of how it affects the majority of L.A. residents,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/cesr\/profile\/kyla-thomas\/\">Kyla Thomas<\/a>, LABarometer director.<\/p>\n<h2>Climate concerns feel personal, but preparedness lags<\/h2>\n<p>Despite the severity of the latest wildfires, Angelenos are less prepared for disaster than they were in 2020. Just 40% say they\u2019re ready for a natural disaster compared to nearly 45% in 2020, a steady decline over the past few years. \u201cIt suggests that even high-impact events like the January wildfires alone may not be sufficient to spur an increase in preparedness,\u201d explained Thomas, a sociologist at CESR.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, concern about climate change remains high \u2014 just over 70% of residents say it feels like a personal threat, a figure virtually unchanged since 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Heat is also becoming harder to ignore. Nearly half of Angelenos reported symptoms of heat exposure, a 20% increase since 2023 when nearly 40% experienced symptoms related to heat exposure.<\/p>\n<h2>Looking ahead to the 2028 L.A. Olympics<\/h2>\n<p>As Los Angeles prepares to host the 2028 Summer Olympics, well over half of residents indicated that they\u2019re looking forward to the Games. But, of the remainder who aren\u2019t, most cite traffic and transportation as their top concerns.<\/p>\n<p>When explicitly asked about the city\u2019s transit readiness:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Almost 40% said L.A. public transit is \u201cnot at all prepared.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Just over one-third said it is only \u201cslightly prepared.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cResidents are clear-eyed about what\u2019s working and what still needs to change,\u201d said Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>Even with major investments to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2025-06-06\/metro-opens-lax-station-offers-free-weekend-rides-across-system\">expand rail lines<\/a>, open new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metro.net\/about\/l-a-metro-officially-opens-the-k-line-marking-a-new-transit-milestone-for-los-angeles-county\/\">stations<\/a> and<u> improve safety<\/u> in recent years, public transit ridership gains <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/news\/stories\/metro-unsafe-say-those-no-longer-riding-post-pandemic\/\">have been modest<\/a>, raising questions about whether the system can support a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/10\/us\/los-angeles-olympics-traffic-transport.html\">car-free<\/a> Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>Metro Rail ridership rose just 2 percentage points over the past year. County Metro ridership rose 2 percentage points so far this year \u2014 but it still lags behind pre-pandemic levels.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Comparing their data to Metro\u2019s recent report that bus boardings increased last year, the researchers suggest that frequent riders may be using buses more often, but occasional riders remain hesitant to return after the pandemic. According to their data, the total number of unique bus users hasn\u2019t fully recovered since the pandemic \u2014 18% thus far this year versus 24% in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>One bright spot, the modest uptick in rail ridership is likely tied to the opening of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metro.net\/moredtla\/\">Regional Connector<\/a> in June 2023, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2023-06-16\/how-to-navigate-metro-regional-connector-downtown-la\">linked<\/a> the A (Blue), E (Expo) and L (Gold) lines through downtown. The E line alone has seen a 17% jump in ridership since January of this year, according to Metro\u2019s recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metro.net\/about\/la-metro-kicks-off-2025-with-continued-ridership-growth\/\">report<\/a> showing an increase in ridership on rail lines.<\/p>\n<p>Another encouraging finding is that more residents say public transit feels safer now than it did a year ago. The share who rate buses as somewhat-to-very safe rose to 26%, up from 21%. Metro rail ratings around safety also saw modest gains.<\/p>\n<h2>Gas-powered cars are still favored as EV enthusiasm cools<\/h2>\n<p>Despite decades of environmental campaigns, an expanded electric vehicle market and rising fuel prices, most Angelenos haven\u2019t moved out of their gas-powered cars \u2014 much less onto buses and trains \u2014 and they don\u2019t plan to. Just over half expect their next vehicle to be electric or hybrid, about a 9% drop from last year.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers suggest that the dip in enthusiasm is part of a broader <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/environment\/story\/2024-07-18\/california-ev-sales-decline-again\">statewide trend<\/a>, exacerbated by national political polarization, tariffs on foreign electric vehicles and declining Tesla sales. The company underperformed its quarterly sales by nearly 25% this year.<\/p>\n<p>Once the face of the EV movement, Tesla has become <a href=\"https:\/\/cleantechnica.com\/2025\/01\/10\/25-of-americans-avoiding-tesla-tech-because-of-elon-musk\/#google_vignette\">politically charged<\/a> since the 2024 election, with some buyers now viewing the brand as a partisan choice.<\/p>\n<h2>About the survey<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/cesr\/labarometer\/\">LABarometer <\/a>is a probability-based internet survey panel of about 2,000 Los Angeles County adults, managed by the USC Dornsife Center for Economic and Social Research.
