and agricultural production have pumped Earth\u2019s atmosphere full of carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2<\/sub>), warming the planet to dangerous levels.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s been much emphasis on reducing CO<sub>2<\/sub> output by switching to greener energy sources, like solar and wind. Scientists and entrepreneurs have also been increasingly interested in capturing the CO<sub>2<\/sub> in the atmosphere and storing it or putting it to use, a practice dubbed carbon capture or carbon removal.<\/p>\n<p>At a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/dornsife-alumni\/dornsife-dialogues\/\">Dornsife Dialogues event<\/a>, experts convened to discuss the promises and problems of this carbon capture technology.<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Climate Solutions: Engineering Earth\u2019s Future\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pTula12HgjE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h2>What is carbon removal?<\/h2>\n<p>Carbon dioxide removal takes many forms, from planting more trees to scrubbing CO<sub>2<\/sub> from the atmosphere and tucking it away underground.<\/p>\n<p>Earth is already an expert in carbon removal. Trees are famous for their carbon capture prowess. Oceans are an even bigger ally: Wherever air meets sea, carbon is sucked into the water where it reacts with limestone rock on the ocean floor and converts it to the solid bicarbonate. This keeps excess carbon locked away, to the tune of 3 billion tons a year.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, Earth\u2019s timeline can\u2019t match human demand. \u201cThe problem is that Earth runs this process. It does this chemistry at its own pace, which is quite slow, whereas we\u2019ve been putting CO<sub>2<\/sub> in the atmosphere very quickly over the last 100 years,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/profile\/william-berelson\/\">William Berelson<\/a>, Paxson H. Offield Professor in Coastal and Marine Systems and professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/earth\/\">Earth sciences<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/environmental-studies\/\">environmental studies<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/spatial\/\">spatial sciences<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Berelson is hoping to boost the ocean\u2019s carbon-absorbing power. He\u2019s working on <a href=\"https:\/\/today.usc.edu\/natural-carbon-capture-unlocking-oceans-secret\/\">a carbon removal system<\/a> that captures CO<sub>2<\/sub> as it\u2019s produced by the shipping industry, mixes it with limestone, and then releases it back into the ocean as bicarbonate.<\/p>\n<h2>Would carbon capture technology just enable continued fossil fuel use?<\/h2>\n<p>Some critics argue that carbon removal may disincentivize ending reliance on fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/profile\/joe-arvai\/\">Joe \u00c1rvai<\/a>, Dana and David Dornsife Chair, <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife-wrigley.usc.edu\/\">Wrigley Institute<\/a> director and professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/psyc\/\">psychology<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/bisc\/\">biological sciences<\/a>and environmental studies, says that we need to focus on both reduction and removal for several reasons. For one, not all emissions can be entirely erased through green energy. \u201cSome industries, like agriculture, are going to be really, really hard in the near term to fully decarbonize,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, there\u2019s the problem of legacy emissions. There isn\u2019t much of a market currently for carbon, although scientists think that could <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/news\/stories\/carbon-dioxide-to-create-products\/\">one day change<\/a>. Thus, paying for the installation of a carbon removal plant can be a challenge.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c1rvai says that policy could help incentivize change. A government might require that companies that produce emissions must also remove them, or risk fines and a suspension of operations. This could create market incentives to drive down the coast of carbon removal and would also essentially act as a tax on emissions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I have to pay to take the CO<sub>2<\/sub> out, and it costs $400 a ton to do that, I\u2019m going to do everything in my power not to emit in the first place,\u201d says Arvai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n  <\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n  \n        \n  \n
