f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <p>Rousing himself from his temporary sleeping quarters on the floor of his friend\u2019s Monterey, California, home, Tyler Schiffman puts on his wetsuit, packs up his camera and diving equipment and heads to the ocean.<\/p>\n<p>After lugging 70 pounds of camera and diving equipment across the empty early morning beach and swimming out through the chilly waters to a kelp bed, he checks his air supply and defogs his mask, then dives.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 315px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" (Photo: Courtesy of Tyler Schiffman.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Heading a few feet down, he carefully composes an image of the sunlight at the surface filtering through a patch of kelp, and just as he presses the shutter button, a seal enters the frame.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe seal swam in, paused for half a second, and swam out. Later that night, reviewing my photos, I thought, \u2018Oh my god, this is a really special photo,\u2019\u201d Schiffman says.<\/p>\n<p>A conservation photographer and filmmaker who graduated from the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences in 2017, Schiffman has spent much of the past four years underwater (and sometimes out of it), shooting up-close photos of animals around the world for publications such as\u00a0<i>The New York Times<\/i>,\u00a0<i>The Atlantic<\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<i>Nature Conservancy Magazine<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy goal is to raise awareness of conservation and humanitarian work,\u201d Schiffman says. \u201cA lot of these amazing stories are just sitting there happening, which is great. But getting the word out to the public raises awareness, raises money for these nongovernmental organizations and can make a big difference in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Getting into the water<\/h2>\n<p>Growing up in Southern California, Schiffman spent a lot of time in the ocean.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was just a little beach bum kid growing up, free diving, surfing and spear fishing as much as possible. It really made me think, \u2018Wow, this world is amazing. I want to protect this,\u2019\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>At USC Dornsife, Schiffman majored in environmental science and health. His introduction to underwater photography came through the USC Dornsife Environmental Studies program, where he took \u201cIntroduction to Scientific Diving\u201d (ENST 298) with David Ginsburg, professor (teaching) of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/environmental-studies\/\">environmental studies<\/a>. Through this course, students are trained and certified as scientific divers at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/wrigley\/wmsc\/\">USC Wrigley Marine Science Center<\/a>\u00a0on Santa Catalina Island, off the coast of Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 455px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tyschiffphotography.com\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/migration-uploads\/Tyler-Schiffman-Nudibranch-instory-3457.jpg\" alt=\"An underwater photo of a purple nudibranch with orange frills on its back.\" width=\"455\" height=\"293\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">A nudibranch called a Spanish shawl appears to gaze into the camera. He would take his camera out every time we went out into the field and shot photos, practicing and getting better,\u201d Ginsburg says. \u201cIt\u2019s easy to take pictures, but it\u2019s hard to really capture images well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was during Ginsburg\u2019s \u201cProblems Without Passports: Integrated Ecosystem Management\u201d summer course (ENST 480) in Palau during his junior year that Schiffman met an acquaintance of Ginsburg\u2019s who had done some work for National Geographic. After the class ended, Schiffman stayed in Palau for a few more weeks learning more about photography, and he started to think about making it more than a hobby.<\/p>\n<p>Back at USC, he picked up a minor in cinematic arts to gain more technical proficiency, and after graduation, he started out small, submitting pictures to local magazines in Los Angeles and then to international photo competitions.<\/p>\n<p>At that time, he was interested in documenting life in the ocean, especially the small, delicate animals few people ever see.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the life that could disappear in half a second. You kick a coral with your fin and it dies. A little change in temperature, a little change in salinity or pH and these lives are gone,\u201d he explains. \u201cWith these photos you\u2019re not going to go and tell some type of groundbreaking news about the macro life of the ocean \u2014 it\u2019s more just to show people that it exists.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Greater recognition<\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 402px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tyschiffphotography.com\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/migration-uploads\/Tyler-Schiffman-Shark-instory-3457.jpg\" alt=\"A black and white photo of a shark swimming beneath a boat surrounded by a school of fish.\" width=\"402\" height=\"259\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">A great white shark cruises near divers in a cage. (Photo: Tyler Schiffman.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>With help from a USC friend, one of Schiffman\u2019s photos ended up in an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/2020\/04\/how-to-tackle-a-giraffe\/606787\/\"><i>Atlantic<\/i>\u00a0article<\/a>\u00a0about giraffes. Another image\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/09\/22\/science\/monterey-bay-aquarium-midnight-zone.html?searchResultPosition=1\">made the cover<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0<i>The New York Times\u2019<\/i>\u00a0Science section. It was then, Schiffman says, that he started to shift his focus from natural history photography to photojournalism and documentary filmmaking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought, now that I have my photography skills refined, let\u2019s get my story skills refined,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Schiffman currently has several film and photography projects in development. One is a documentary about a small town in Mexico in which nongovernmental organizations and a construction technology company are using 3D printing technology to create houses for the impoverished residents. Another documentary, recently completed and ready for the film festival circuit, looks at the life of a sea urchin diver. He continues his conservation photography and commercial work, as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOther photographers have said, \u2018It&#8217;s not the photos you take, it\u2019s the stories you tell.\u2019 I have found what I love: It\u2019s being a storyteller,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s taking these scientific stories, my love of science and my love of the ocean and communicating it to
