Nearly half of Americans now identify as unaffiliated with any political party. It\u2019s a big move, away from traditional allegiances, that is reshaping the political landscape.<\/p>\n<p><strong>By the numbers<\/strong>: Two decades ago, less than a third of Americans identified as independents. Today, it\u2019s 49%, according to a recent Gallup poll.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What they\u2019re saying:<\/strong> With <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/center-for-political-future\/about-the-center\/staff\/bob-shrum-democrat-political-consultant\/\">Robert Shrum<\/a>, director of the USC Dornsife <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/center-for-political-future\/\">Center for the Political Future<\/a>, serving as co-moderator, panelists discussed reasons for this rising trend.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cNeither party has presented a platform that resonates with many Americans, leading to more declaring independence,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/center-for-political-future\/fellows-program\/meet-our-fellows\/arnon-mishkin\/\"><strong>Arnon Mishkin<\/strong><\/a>, director of the Fox News Decision Desk and a fellow at the center.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cVoters are disillusioned with major party candidates, prompting a shift to independent identification,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uniteamerica.org\/team\/lisa-d-t-rice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Lisa D.T.
