between officers and drivers during traffic stops.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The research is led<\/strong> by a multidisciplinary team based at USC, including scholars from psychology, sociology, engineering, computer science, computer science, public health, and public policy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The big picture:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2023-08-22\/lapd-to-use-ai-to-analyze-body-cam-videos-for-officers-language-use\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Los Angeles Times<\/em><\/a> reports that the LAPD\u2019s move to integrate AI into its operations is part of a broader initiative to improve communication between its officers and the public. The study aims to provide clarity and actionable insights.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s happening:<\/strong> Over three years, the Everyday Respect research team will:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Review body camera footage<\/strong> from roughly 1,000 traffic stops.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Develop measurements of<\/strong> interactions between officers and the public based on department policy as well as feedback from community members and police officers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Feed these measures <\/strong>into a machine-learning tool that will autonomously analyze thousands of additional videos.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Between the lines<\/strong>: Findings from the study will be used to help train officers on how best to navigate encounters with the public and \u201cto promote accountability,\u201d according to Cmdr. Marla Ciuffetelli of the LAPD\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lapdonline.org\/office-of-the-chief-of-police\/constitutional-policing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Office of Constitutional Policing and Policy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>What she said:<\/strong> Machine learning \u201cis in its infancy, but will undoubtedly become a profound element in officer training in the future.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>All data regarding individuals <\/strong>featured in the videos will be anonymized in the final report.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The subjective nature<\/strong> of certain standards means there\u2019s room for debate on what the AI deems \u201cappropriate.\u201d The researchers acknowledge these challenges, emphasizing the importance of diverse feedback and rigorous criteria development.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Factors such as the location of the stop<\/strong> and the driver\u2019s race, as well as the officer\u2019s rank, age, and experience, will be part of the analysis. Data regarding all individuals will be kept anonymous.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What to watch:<\/strong> The study\u2019s preliminary results are expected a year into the research.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The bottom line: <\/strong>While acknowledging that it\u2019s \u201chard to speculate what\u2019s going to happen with the research until it\u2019s done,\u201d Ciuffetelli
