resources for your work?<\/p>\n<p>When this question hits a researcher\u2019s ears, it usually sparks more than a little interest. For John Wilson and Manuel Pastor, it led to a $2.9 million grant from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bezosearthfund.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bezos Earth Fund<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The two USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences professors, invited by the Earth Fund to apply for the grant, will use the funds to counter some of climate change\u2019s negative impacts and to narrow existing environmental equity gaps plaguing cities across the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Over the next two years, Wilson, director of USC Dornsife\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/spatial.usc.edu\/\">Spatial Sciences Institute<\/a>, and Pastor, director of USC Dornsife\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/eri\/\">Equity Research Institute<\/a>, will develop tools to promote and prioritize equity-driven urban greening.<\/p>\n<p>In practical terms, this means finding the best places to add tree canopies, which have proven effective in lowering urban area land temperatures, where they are sorely needed in underserved communities.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16058\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16058\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-16058 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/07\/px_earthfund_grant_instorya-500x340.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/07\/px_earthfund_grant_instorya-500x340.jpg 500w, https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/07\/px_earthfund_grant_instorya-768x522.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2023\/07\/px_earthfund_grant_instorya.jpg 980w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16058\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">USC scholars work with community members on the USC Urban Trees project. He and Wilson will work closely with community partners to provide tools for understanding the issues they face and advocate for real-world change based on scientific findings.<\/p>\n<p>The grant comes as part of the Bezos Earth Fund\u2019s Greening America\u2019s Cities initiative, a $400 million commitment through 2030 to create more equitable access to urban green spaces by increasing the number of parks, trees and community gardens in U.S. cities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Bezos Earth Fund is proud to partner with local communities and government to expand urban green spaces,\u201d said Andrew Steer, president and CEO of the Bezos Earth Fund. \u201cIn partnership, this new initiative will support historically underserved communities, supporting their health and well-being.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Tools to inform action<\/h3>\n<p>Over recent years, researchers at the Spatial Sciences Institute \u2014 as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/news\/stories\/public-exchange-urban-trees-initiative-eastside-los-angeles\/\">USC Urban Trees Initiative<\/a> led by USC Dornsife\u2019s Public Exchange \u2014 have been working with the City of Los Angeles and community partners like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northeasttrees.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">North East Trees<\/a> to analyze the existing urban canopy and plantings in five low-income L.A. neighborhoods.<\/p>\n<p>The Bezos grant will help advance this work and complete data analysis. (Image: Esther Margulies.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Equity Research Institute scholars, meanwhile, will expand their relationship with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.policylink.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PolicyLink<\/a>, a longtime partner in producing the <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalequityatlas.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Equity Atlas<\/a>. The atlas provides community leaders and policymakers with national and regional data on demographic change, racial and economic inclusion, and the potential economic gains from racial equity.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ll also cultivate deeper connections with community-based partners like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.treepeople.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TreePeople<\/a> and the Atlanta-based <a href=\"https:\/\/psequity.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Partnership for Southern Equity<\/a> to accelerate urban greening initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, institute researchers will identify and integrate four new environmental indicators into the Atlas to support climate justice efforts in U.S. cities.
