Disease Control and Prevention and pediatric clinicians to increase the COVID-19 vaccination rate among children, many remain unvaccinated due to parental concerns about the vaccine\u2019s long-term effects and anticipated responsibility. Those are findings from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/publications.aap.org\/pediatrics\/article\/doi\/10.1542\/peds.2022-058971\/191051\/Role-of-Parents-Perceived-Risk-and-Responsibility\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a new study<\/a>\u00a0published in\u00a0<em>Pediatrics<\/em> and conducted by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cesr.usc.edu\/\">Center for Economic and Social Research<\/a>(CESR) at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers sought to determine the causes of low child vaccination rates. Currently, only 39% of children 5 to 11 and 68% of those 12 to 17 have received vaccinations, compared to 92% of adults.<\/p>\n<p>During the Omicron variant\u2019s spike between February and March 2022, when pediatric COVID-19 cases peaked,\u00a0the USC\u00a0Dornsife survey of parents in the nationally representative\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/news\/stories\/3830\/time-sensitive-research-at-warp-speed\/\">Understanding America Study<\/a>\u00a0revealed that 45% of parents believed the vaccine\u2019s long-term risks to their child outweighed the risks of not being vaccinated.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cesr.usc.edu\/people\/staff\/liu385\">Ying Liu<\/a>, research scientist at CESR and the study lead, explained that \u201cparents\u2019 hesitancy may be partly driven by apprehension about the vaccine, stemming from its rapid development and the use of newer techniques.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, 18% of parents said they\u2019d feel a heightened sense of responsibility if their child became sick following vaccination.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople often exhibit a more cautious approach when making medical decisions for others, including their own children, than for themselves,\u201d Liu said. \u201cSome tend to do nothing rather than vaccinate their child, even though such inaction could result in negative consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Said\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cesr.usc.edu\/people\/staff\/kapteyn\">Arie Kapteyn<\/a>, director of CESR and professor (research) of economics at USC Dornsife: \u201cThis research underscores the pressing need to address parental perceptions of the COVID-19 vaccine.
