f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <p>When David Crombecque first joined the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/mathematics\/\">Department of Mathematics<\/a>\u00a0faculty at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences in 2012, he routinely heard students questioning their career prospects with a math degree.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe I could teach?\u201d he heard students wonder aloud.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, Crombecque, professor (teaching) of mathematics, knew more possibilities existed for the university\u2019s math majors.<\/p>\n<p>With the unrelenting rise of technology, the accelerating importance of data across industries and, above all, the rigorous problem-solving skills mathematics courses cultivated in a liberal arts college, Crombecque believed mathematics majors\u2019 professional capabilities extended far beyond what many students imagined.<\/p>\n<p>To illustrate that point, Crombecque launched an annual career panel for math majors alongside fellow faculty member\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/cf\/faculty-and-staff\/faculty.cfm?pid=1003338\">Cymra Haskell<\/a>,\u00a0professor (teaching) of mathematics.<\/p>\n<p>In 2015, they began inviting a handful of USC Dornsife math alumni to campus each spring to share how their math education propelled their professional pursuits.<\/p>\n<p>The personal stories of alumni representing fields such as law, medicine, consulting, tech and finance underscored the versatility of a math degree and its promise in the marketplace.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMath majors are\u00a0not scared of numbers\u00a0and\u00a0understand the hunt for solutions, and those are valuable skills in many fields today,\u201d says Crombecque, who also served as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uscmathclub.github.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USC Math Club<\/a>\u2019s advisor for six years.<\/p>\n<p>Those two skills alone \u2014 problem-solving ability paired with a high level of quantitative literacy, which Crombecque defines as the ability to understand and handle numbers \u2014 position math majors to contribute in various professional roles and industries. For instance, in politics, those skills help strengthen policy positions; in consumer technology, they help drive decision-making around a key go-to-market strategy like pricing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMath students know how to use numbers to make an argument, and regardless\u00a0of the field you\u2019re in\u00a0today, you\u2019re going to be asked to back up an idea with numbers and data,\u201d Crombecque says.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, rigor is baked into mathematics training at USC Dornsife. Students develop the ability to think through a complex problem logically and arrive at precise conclusions. In professional fields like law and engineering \u2014 two common professional landing spots for math majors \u2014 such intellectual persistence spurs results.<\/p>\n<p>The value\u00a0of mathematical skills\u00a0in the marketplace\u00a0has trickled down from industries to universities to high schools, where\u00a0young\u00a0students\u00a0increasingly recognize mathematics\u2019 role in hot fields like artificial intelligence, machine learning and data science. That\u2019s one reason, Crombecque says, the\u00a0number of math majors at USC has\u00a0surged\u00a0over recent years, rising nearly 27% from 2019 to 2022. Today, USC Dornsife hosts nearly 500 mathematics majors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no longer this narrow thought that math majors are pigeonholed into teaching or becoming accountants,\u201d he says. \u201cToday\u2019s students understand there\u2019s so much more out there for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And it helps as well that the university\u2019s Department of Mathematics is housed in the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences. This has been really helpful in the professional world, because miscommunication can introduce a lot of chaos into collaborative projects. I also learned how to build complex systems by breaking things down into simple, manageable components. I learned to bend my mind to understand why things were true, things that violated my own vision of what I was experiencing in the world. I only got to the right answer by using my imagination.
