f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <p>They look simple enough, light gray and about the size of a loaf of bread. On their face, a label sports a colorful \u201cC\u201d stylized to resemble a molecular structure along with the words \u201cCarbon Census at USC.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Inside the metal boxes, a highly sophisticated package of electronic sensors sniffs the surrounding air for an array of pollutants. The climate-warming gas carbon dioxide, its suffocating cousin carbon monoxide and various nitrogen oxide-containing compounds, the type that turn the Los Angeles air hazy orange and brown, rank high among the noxious air components.<\/p>\n<p>The sensors also detect particulate matter \u2014 microscopic bits of smoke, soot, dust and other harmful compounds \u2014 and ozone, and they measure air temperature and humidity.<\/p>\n<p>The boxes are part of a network assembled by <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/cf\/faculty-and-staff\/faculty.cfm?pid=1003093\">William Berelson<\/a>, professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/earth\">Earth sciences<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/environmental-studies\/\">environmental studies<\/a> at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, to map air quality in various L.A. neighborhoods.<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/c7qufDGmb-M\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><strong>From one sensor to a city-wide network<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It started with a single sensor Berelson uses in his lab on USC\u2019s University Park campus. \u201cI have a CO<sub>2<\/sub> and methane analyzer and have been measuring air from the rooftop of my lab building for a few years,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>When he heard about a network of sensors that monitor air quality in Berkeley, California, Berelson \u201cthought it would be great to do a similar network in L.A.,\u201d he said. He now has 12 sensors distributed at Los Angeles Unified School District sites, USC\u2019s campuses and other locations.<\/p>\n<p>Berelson has a number of ambitions for his carbon sensor network. First, he wants to map air quality on a neighborhood scale to determine if and how the concentration of the assorted pollutants changes over time and in various locations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor example, is carbon monoxide always higher at sites near freeways \u2014 does truck traffic drive CO concentration? That hypothesis is based on the fact that CO forms in combustion engines,\u201d he says, and his sensors can help determine if that belief is correct.<\/p>\n<p>Berelson also aims to find out if levels of particulate matter \u2014 particularly the dangerous \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/news.usc.edu\/173864\/pollution-brain-fine-particles-new-usc-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PM2.5<\/a>\u201d \u2014 are higher or lower in regions of the city with more trees and plants because, he says, \u201cvegetation can sometimes \u2018sponge\u2019 PM from air, but they can also make the organic precursors of PM.\u201d The project contributes to USC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/news\/stories\/3398\/usc-and-the-city-of-los-angeles-launch-urban-forest-project-on-t\/\">Urban Trees Initiative<\/a>, a collaborative project led by USC Dornsife\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/publicexchange.usc.edu\/\">Public Exchange<\/a> designed to assist L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti\u2019s goal of planting nearly 100,000 trees throughout the city.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/migration-uploads\/CarbonCensus_Berelson_InStoryA-3525.jpg\" alt=\"An open Carbon Census sensor box shows electronic wiring and pollution-detecting equipment\" width=\"630\" height=\"406\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">A sensor\u2019s sophisticated electronic components can detect a variety of atmospheric compounds.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A key function of Berelson\u2019s carbon sensor network will be to establish the current levels of CO<sub>2<\/sub> throughout L.A. so researchers, policymakers and others can clearly see the effects of moving to more eco-friendly practices, such as driving electric vehicles, riding mass transit or telecommuting for work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want a good baseline set of CO<sub>2<\/sub> measurements so we can see how CO<sub>2<\/sub> content in L.A. air is changing over time and, perhaps, due to changes in social behavior,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Berelson says the project offers plenty of opportunities for students to contribute and learn. Currently, Emma Johnson, a junior majoring in geological sciences at USC Dornsife, is developing software for the sensors that will be used for the Urban Trees Initiative. Berelson says a high school student is also working with his group and he expects more undergrads to join in the fall.<\/p>\n<p>In the long term, Berelson hopes to add more sensors and expand the L.A. network, but he also wants to develop networks in other cities if he can obtain the needed funding.
