They bring a diverse array of academic expertise including knowledge of technology in the Middle East, how voters\u2019 race and gender shape campaign messaging and the historical intertwining of art and the environment. Here they share more insights about their work and what they like to do outside the academy.<\/p>\n<hr style=\"clear: both;\" \/>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/cf\/faculty-and-staff\/faculty.cfm?pid=1105229\">Monica Bravo<\/a>\u00a0| Assistant Professor of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/ahis\/\">Art History<\/a><\/h2>\n<div class=\"news-image-portrait news-image-left\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/migration-uploads\/Monica-Bravo-3537.jpg\" width=\"242\" height=\"269\" \/><\/div>\n<p><strong>Academic focus:<\/strong>\u00a0I focus on the modern art of the Americas and the history of photography. My current research project, Silver Pacific, focuses on 1840\u201390 and transforms the geographies typically associated with American photographic history to consider transpacific networks and overlapping ecologies.<\/p>\n<p>Informed by the environmental humanities and technical art history, my analysis looks not only at the surface of photographs as images, but through to the photographs as objects \u2014 material encrustations of regional mineral wealth, extracted by (often migrant) human labor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Favorite book you\u2019ve read lately?<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/576912\/how-much-of-these-hills-is-gold-by-c-pam-zhang\/\"><i>How Much of These Hills is Gold<\/i><\/a><i>\u00a0<\/i>by C. What would be on the menu?<\/strong>Mexico\u2019s former President Anastasio Bustamante, who, among other things, earned the nickname \u201ccome huevos\u201d (egg eater) for consuming as many as 36 eggs a day. My current research focuses on natural gas energy in Iran, and how the infrastructures built to support its use reflected sometimes conflicting demands for cheap energy, national independence, industrialized convenience and environmental protection.<\/p>\n<p>In general, I aim to put technological and environmental change in the Global South within their historical and social contexts. The questions I explore center on intersecting histories of art, science and environment in the 19th and 20th centuries. I\u2019m fascinated by how visualizations of landscape and geography \u2014 including paintings, maps, photographs and illustrated texts \u2014 conveyed changing understandings of \u201cnature\u201d across cultural, scientific and ecological dimensions of American empire.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m currently working on a book about how seacoasts were pictured in the 19th-century United States. I\u2019m also starting new research on images produced by the Environmental Protection Agency in the 1970s.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What inspires you?\u00a0<\/strong>I\u2019m equally inspired by engaging with art and being outdoors, which probably helps explain why I study what I study!
