f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <p>It\u2019s the first month of a new year and if you\u2019re anything like me you will have made a long list of well-meaning and self-improving resolutions for 2022. For those determined to live this year on a more sustainable note, faculty at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences have compiled a list of their favorite sustainability tips \u2014 small changes in behavior that can help make us feel good about helping shift the trajectory toward a greener future. From baking to bidets to eating more Brussels sprouts, here are their ideas.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/migration-uploads\/Faculty_SustainablityTips_InStoryA-3618.jpg\" alt=\"Photos of home-made bread loaves.\" width=\"190\" height=\"295\" \/>Moh El-Naggar |<\/strong> <strong>Dean\u2019s Professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/physics\/\">Physics and Astronomy<\/a>\u00a0and Professor of Physics and Astronomy and <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/chemistry\/\">Chemistry<\/a>\u00a0and Divisional Dean for the Physical Sciences and <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/mathematics\/\">Mathematics<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe pandemic turned me into a sourdough baker! I have enjoyed cooking for years but thought baking too prescriptive for my taste. After all, when your lab weighs and measures things all day, do you really want to do that at home? In March 2020, finding baking yeast was hard, and I turned my biophysics and microbiology knowledge to bread. With an active microbial culture (lovingly called \u2018Bucky\u2019 in our house) collected by a neighbor from an English barley field, I can now turn water, wheat and salt into better tasting bread than most loaves transported by fossil fuels to stores. And the early \u2018practice\u2019 loaves? We ate those delicious mistakes\u00a0too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sarah Feakins | Professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/earth\/\">Earth Sciences<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrowing up in rainy England, we always line-dried our clothes and ran out to collect them between frequent cloud-bursts. In typically warm and dry Los Angeles weather, hanging your laundry on a folding rack \u2014 even inside, for those of us without yards \u2014 is an easy energy-saver. It\u2019s equally easy to follow the crowd and\u00a0just\u00a0do as others do. But, when it comes to decisions about sustainability, I always start by taking a step back and asking myself, \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/13669877.2019.1569107\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">What matters to me<\/a>? What are my values? And how would I feel in the future if I made a choice that ran counter to them?\u2019 This\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/behavioural-public-policy\/article\/beyond-choice-architecture-a-building-code-for-structuring-climate-risk-management-decisions\/2A3B4E4D4DD079A0C82FFDEA4D93DF4B\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stop-and-think approach<\/a>\u00a0has served me well on everything from the products I buy and the foods I eat, to the things I do at work and for fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 530px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/migration-uploads\/Faculty_SustainabilityTips_InStoryC-3618.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of colorful fruits and vegetables.\" width=\"530\" height=\"342\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Reduce meat consumption when possible. (Image Source: iStock.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>W\u00e4ndi Bruine de Bruin | Provost Professor of Public Policy, <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/psyc\/\"> Psychology<\/a>\u00a0and Behavioral Science<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn several studies, we have found that even environmentally-conscious people don\u2019t necessarily know how to best reduce their carbon footprint.\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/107\/37\/16054\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/107\/37\/16054\">For example<\/a>, many families fight about who left the lights on when in fact running the air conditioner less will have a much bigger effect on reducing their carbon footprint. And when thinking about how to reduce the carbon footprint of their\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.1088\/1748-9326\/ab465d\/meta\" href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.1088\/1748-9326\/ab465d\/meta\">diets<\/a>, many people worry about avoiding waste, but actually eating less meat makes a much bigger difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"clear: both;\"><strong>William Berelson | Professor of Earth Sciences, <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/environmental-studies\/\">Environmental Studies<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/spatial.usc.edu\/\">Spatial Sciences<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201c<\/strong>Eat less meat; the carbon footprint of beef is pretty extraordinary. There is the destruction of forest (living carbon sinks) to accommodate pastureland. And the conversion of lots of carbon into less carbon, with waste methane and CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0as a result. So, I\u2019m trying to eat less meat. I\u2019m succeeding. My sons, Lincoln, age 6, and Dylan, age 3, love learning about the different plants, digging holes and getting dirty, in addition to watching the fruit and veggies grow, and then being able to use them in a meal.\u00a0We also talk about the importance of composting, minimizing food waste, and promoting ecosystem services by planting certain plants to attract bees and other pollinators.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 535px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/migration-uploads\/Faculty_SustainabilityTips_InStoryE-3618.jpg\" alt=\"Image of a hand holding a sign with the symbol for recycling.\" width=\"535\" height=\"344\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Reduce, Reuse, Recycle \u2014 and don\u2019t forget to Refuse. (Image Source: iStock.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Erin Moore | Professor (Teaching) of <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/anth\/\">Anthropology<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe mantra is \u2018refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle.\u2019 I didn\u2019t know the first law was \u2018refuse\u2019 \u2014 don\u2019t take the little shampoos in hotels, don\u2019t accept flyers, samples or giveaways at conferences that you don\u2019t need.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the Anthropology Department, we try to be more sustainable in the workplace \u2014 avoiding lunches packaged in Styrofoam and opting for water pitchers with paper cups instead of individual plastic water bottles and plastic cups.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI make my own yogurt, and kombucha, use public transportation and ride a bicycle.\u00a0I have a drought garden with California native plants and save all the falling leaves to mulch. A bidet attachment on the toilet saves on paper. I have cloth bags for the grocery store and smaller ones for produce (or I just throw the loose apples or bananas into my wicker basket).\u00a0I try to remember to bring my own containers to meals out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had one student with a bamboo spork in his wallet. I was impressed!\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"clear: both;\"><strong>Josh West | Professor of Earth Sciences and Environmental Studies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHeating and cooling are a big part of our energy use; for many of us, they equate to roughly a third of our total energy footprint. You can save energy \u2014 and money \u2014 by making sure your systems are well-maintained and by turning down the thermostat in winter and wearing an extra layer indoors, or compromising a bit on air conditioning in the summer (maybe with the help of a fan). Even a change of a couple of degrees makes a difference.
