This past year, USC Dornsife has seen research breakthroughs, inroads to productive political discourse and exceptional achievement by faculty and students alike. As the last few days of 2017 draw to a close and we reflect on the past 12 months, we present six widely read stories highlighting the year’s accomplishments.


January – February: New technology enables 5-dimensional imaging in live animals and humans (with video) by Darrin S. Joy

A computer algorithm for analyzing time-lapse images could make it easier for scientists and clinicians to find and track multiple molecules in living organisms.

March – April: Dornsife Dialogues event explores political civility (with video) by Susan Bell

The inaugural Dornsife Dialogues event offers students, faculty and staff a conversation on the tenor and evolution of political discourse.

May – June: A math Ph.D. that goes beyond the numbers by Darrin S. Joy

Earning a doctorate in mathematics from USC Dornsife is the culmination of years of diligent study, and just the beginning of a prolific career for Bahar Acu.

July – August: Stiff vessels, low blood flow in the brain forewarn of dementia by Michelle Boston and Emily Gersema

USC researchers plan to explore whether this early sign could be targeted by drugs already approved for treating other health conditions.

September – October: USC Dornsife’s Viet Thanh Nguyen wins prestigious MacArthur Foundation Award by Susan Bell

The “genius grant” honors the Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist and professor of English, American studies and ethnicity and comparative literature.

November – December: USC Dornsife senior named 2018 Marshall Scholar by Laura Paisley

International relations major Jamie Kwong is USC’s 12th recipient of the prestigious honor, affording her graduate study in England to pursue her goal of global nuclear disarmament.
