College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, was acknowledged by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/prizes\/chemistry\/2024\/press-release\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2024 Nobel Prize in chemistry<\/a> laureate John Jumper during a press conference following the announcement of his prize this week.<\/p>\n<p>Jumper highlighted <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/news\/stories\/structural-biologist-helen-berman-elected-national-academy-of-sciences\/\">Berman<\/a>\u2019s pioneering work developing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcsb.org\/pages\/about-us\/index\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Protein Data Bank<\/a> (PDB), which was established in 1971 as the first open-access digital repository for 3D structures of biological molecules.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI also want to really thank the giants on whose shoulders we stand, I think the entire experimental community, the people that developed the ability to measure protein structures, especially to Helen Berman and other pioneers of the Protein Data Bank, the PDB, who had the foresight to put these data together to make it available \u2026,\u201d Jumper said.<\/p>\n<p>Experimental data made accessible with PDB has enabled the development of transformative artificial intelligence models like AlphaFold2, an advanced AI system developed by Google\u2019s DeepMind AI lab that predicts protein structures and a result of the Nobel Prize-winning research.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1021\" It is really gratifying,\u201d said Berman, who is a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/bridge-institute\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bridge Institute<\/a>\u00a0at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/michelson.usc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USC Michelson Center for Convergent Bioscience<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The recognition underscores the importance of Berman\u2019s contributions, which are now being furthered by ongoing research at USC Dornsife. Scientists such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rohslab.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Remo Rohs<\/a>, founding chair of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qcb-dornsife.usc.edu\/\">Department of Quantitative and Computational Biology<\/a>, are applying artificial intelligence to unlock new insights into the structure and function of proteins, as well as the <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/news\/stories\/ai-dna-code-of-life\/\">intricate code of DNA<\/a>. One such breakthrough has been an AI model developed to <a href=\"https:\/\/today.usc.edu\/usc-researchers-develop-ai-model-that-predicts-the-accuracy-of-protein-dna-binding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">predict the accuracy of protein-DNA binding<\/a>, helping scientists understand how specific proteins interact with genetic material. This capability paves the way for targeted therapies that can influence genetic regulation and disease treatment.<\/p>\n<p>Rohs, professor of quantitative and computational biology, chemistry, physics and astronomy and computer science, and his colleagues are also harnessing computational biology and AI to <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/magazine\/crunching-codes-crafting-cures\/\">reimagine how we approach drug development<\/a>.
