{"id":324,"date":"2023-04-23T18:08:14","date_gmt":"2023-04-24T01:08:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/mgsa\/?page_id=324"},"modified":"2025-09-21T13:40:39","modified_gmt":"2025-09-21T20:40:39","slug":"travel-funding","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/mgsa\/travel-funding\/","title":{"rendered":"Travel Funding"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n  \n    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div\n  class=\"cc--component-container cc--rich-text \"\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  >\n  <div class=\"c--component c--rich-text\"\n    \n      >\n\n    \n      \n<div class=\"f--field f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <div class=\"html-content\">\n<p>To receive funding from the math department for travel to workshops, conferences, seminars, etc., fill out the <a href=\"https:\/\/forms.gle\/hcpwdZMZVHdwwpgz5\">Travel Awards form<\/a>\u00a0<strong>at least 4 weeks before your intended travel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Other sources of funding:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ask your advisor for funding.<\/li>\n<li>Apply to the conference or seminar you are attending for funding.<\/li>\n<li>Apply to the <a href=\"https:\/\/gsg.usc.edu\/\">Graduate Student Government<\/a> travel award on <a href=\"https:\/\/engage.usc.edu\/feeds?type=club&amp;type_id=35916&amp;tab=surveys\">their EngageSC page<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/phd-academy\/funding\/\">Dornsife PhD Academy<\/a> offers up to $500 in support, available annually, if you attend four of their events.<\/li>\n<li>Check <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/graduate-resources\/funding-opportunities\/\">Dornsife Graduate Resources<\/a> for eligible funding opportunities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n  <\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n  \n    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div\n  class=\"cc--component-container cc--rich-text \"\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  >\n  <div class=\"c--component c--rich-text\"\n    \n      >\n\n    \n      \n<div class=\"f--field f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <div class=\"html-content\"><\/div>\n<h2>The information below may be outdated.<\/h2>\n<div class=\"html-content\">\n<p><strong>What can be reimbursed:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Funding can go toward conference registration, flights, hotels, food (but not alcohol), and ground transportation.<\/li>\n<li>Keep itemized receipts for all expenses, together with a receipt showing your method of payment.<\/li>\n<li>If you would like to rent a car, this requires special approval from the department.<\/li>\n<li>If you plan on driving your own car, you can not expense gas, but you can be reimbursed up to the Personal Vehicle Mileage Limit of $0.575\/mile (as of 2020), or the cost of a flight, whichever is less. If you plan on driving, you need to get evidence of the price of an equivalent flight before you travel. You also need to include a map that includes the number of miles to\/from your destination.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>How to get reimbursed:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fill out a <a href=\"https:\/\/ngp.usc.edu\/files\/2015\/09\/Travel-Expense-Report.pdf\">Travel Expense Report<\/a>, attach receipts, and bring to the administrative assistant (Adriana Del Villar).<\/li>\n<li>It is important (i.e. for tax and accounting purposes) that you fill out your expense report as soon as possible\u2014ideally the week you return from your trip.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/engage.usc.edu\/Gsg\/pdf\/\"><b>Graduate Student Government (GSG)<\/b><\/a> also has a fund for travel stipends for graduate students. This fund, known as the <b>Professional Development Fund<\/b>, aims to support graduate students in developing skills and experiences necessary for post-graduation success.
