Congratulations\u00a0to\u00a0Inga Girshfeld<\/strong>\u00a0for her latest paper,\u00a0Neural Local Wasserstein Regression<\/a>, joint with our very own Xiaohui Chen! Inga develops a new approach to estimation using\u00a0a flexible nonparametric framework that models regression through locally defined transport maps in Wasserstein space, thereby avoiding limitations of global map assumptions and linearization structures. Inga\u2019s work has been accepted for presentation at\u00a0Topology, Algebra, and Geometry in Data Science (TAG-DS) in San Diego in December 2025 as well as for the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Washington, DC in January 2026.\u00a0Congratulations\u00a0and keep up the amazing work, Inga!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n \n <\/div>\n\n\n \n \n \n

Congratulations to\u00a0Jiaqi Liu<\/strong> for presenting her recent joint work with Juhi Jang and Nader Masmoudi on waiting time solutions in gas dynamics at the AMS 2025 Fall Southeastern Sectional Meeting! Jiaqi discussed the construction of a continuum family of self-similar waiting time solutions for the one-dimensional compressible Euler equations with the vacuum boundary, which exhibit the change of the boundary behavior, singularity formation and continuation. The work has answered an open question in the vacuum free boundary Euler problem in gas dynamics and it has been recently published by Journal de Mathematiques Pures et Appliquees. Congratulations\u00a0to\u00a0Bixing\u00a0Qiao<\/strong>\u00a0for the acceptance of his paper by SIAM Journal of Control and Optimation (a top journal in control theory):\u00a0Set Values of Dynamic Nonzero Sum Games and Set-Valued Hamiltonians<\/a>,\u00a0co-authored with Jianfeng Zhang!<\/p>\n

A nonzero sum game typically has multiple values, and it was proposed to study the set of all values which is by nature unique.\u00a0Bixing’s work provides a full characterization of the set value of the game through the set-valued Hamiltonian and thus enable us to study games through PDEs, a popular approach for stochastic control problems. In particular, in some settings,\u00a0Bixing\u00a0transformed the game problem into a control problem, which simplifies the problem greatly and is very helpful for further study of the games.<\/p>\n

With several papers completed, we hope you will continue to advance the research in your field,\u00a0Bixing!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n \n <\/div>\n\n\n \n \n \n

Congratulations to Jiayi Wen<\/strong> for his presentation at FPSAC 2025 in Japan! Formal Power Series and Algebraic Combinatorics (FPSAC) is the largest and longest running annual international conference in combinatorics which has a competitive peer-review process for vetting submissions. Jiayi\u2019s work with Eric Marberg deriving new formulas for K-theory was among the accepted papers for this year. The full arxiv preprint can be read\u00a0here<\/a>. Together, they generalize the expansion for symplectic Grothendieck polynomials into classical Grothendieck polynomials to the orthogonal case when the indexing permutation is vexillary. We expect this will be the first of many future presentations for Jiayi at FPSAC. Congratulations again!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n \n <\/div>\n\n\n \n \n \n

Congratulations to Troy Tao<\/strong> for his preprint:\u00a0Differentially Private Model-X Knockoffs via Johnson-Lindenstrauss Transform<\/a>, co-authored with Adel Javanmard!<\/p>\n

High-dimensional feature selection is widely used across healthcare, genetics, finance, and psychology, but methods that ensure both statistical reliability and privacy are rare. Existing privacy approaches often inject noise directly, jeopardizing core structures such as exchangeability for principled feature selection based on Model-X knockoff. Troy\u2019s paper employs the idea of dimension reduction via the Johnson-Lindenstrauss Transform (JLT) that preserves the crucial covariance structure while guaranteeing differential privacy, thus enabling well-conditioned knockoff inference.<\/p>\n

This work provides both theoretical insight and practical tools for conducting reliable, private feature selection in high-dimensional settings. By ensuring that statistical power remains high and False Discovery Rate (FDR) remains controlled while preserving privacy via JLT, the method empowers trustworthy inference in sensitive domains. Big thank you to Ben Gillen<\/strong> for serving as the TA Mentor for the incoming PhD students!<\/p>\n

Ben spent this past summer freezing in Alaska while applying Sobol\u2019 indices to a ringed seal matrix population model to better understand the uncertainty apportionment. Matrix population models are valuable tools for assessing population dynamics, but there is limited research for how uncertainty in the model inputs propagates. Ben was able to support the claim that the most important factor for continued population success is adult survival rate. He hopes to apply these uncertainty apportionment techniques more broadly to matrix population models, with the goal of deepening theoretical insights into MPMs and expanding the scope and rigor of research in this area.<\/p>\n

Congratulations<\/span>\u00a0to Bixing Qiao for being invited to speak at the 12th\u00a0Western Conference on Mathematical Finance last month.<\/p>\n

This conference brings together researchers from Western U.S. who work in the areas of quantitative finance, stochastic control and games, stochastic and statistical methods in finance and insurance, climate finance, decentralized finance, machine learning and reinforcement learning, and other areas to present recent works and foster new interactions. The conference pays strong attention to promoting researchers and academics in the early stages of their career.<\/p>\n

Bixing discussed his recent work on the Kyle-Back Strategic Insider Trading Problem. Such a problem considers optimal trading with asymmetric information and has been studied extensively in market microstructure theory for about 40 years. By using the nonzero sum game theory, Bixing proposed a new approach to this problem, which provides interesting new insights and improves the results significantly. \u00a0We hope you will continue to grow in this field, Bixing!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n \n <\/div>\n\n\n \n \n \n

Congratulations to Jiaqi Liu for being awarded a 2025-2026 Russell Endowed Dissertation Completion Fellowship! Jiaqi was selected from a pool of nominees across the university based on the compelling strength of her work on imploding and exploding shock waves, which can be described by the non-isentropic Euler equations, a classical subject in gas dynamics. Jiaqi currently has three papers out, two appearing soon in Archive for Rational Mechanics and Analysis (ARMA) and SIAM journal for Analysis (SIMA), both high level PDE journals. With this additional year of full fellowship support, we\u2019re certain Jiaqi will achieve even more outstanding results. Congratulations, Rundong Ding for his latest preprint: HNCI High-Dimensional Network Causal Inference (https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2412.18568), co-authored with Wenqin Du, Yingying Fan, and Jinchi Lv! The problem of evaluating the effectiveness of a treatment or policy commonly appears in causal inference applications under network interference. In this paper, Rundong and his collaborators suggest the new method of high-dimensional network causal inference (HNCI) that provides both valid confidence interval on the average direct treatment effect on the treated (ADET) and valid confidence set for the neighborhood size for interference effect. The practical utilities of the newly suggested methods are demonstrated through simulation and real data examples. We look forward to seeing the far reaching ramifications of this fantastic work!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n \n <\/div>\n\n\n \n \n \n

Student Spotlight: <\/strong>Congratulations\u00a0to Bixing Qiao for his paper “Set Values of Dynamic Nonzero Sum Games and Set Valued Hamiltonians”\u00a0(https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2408.09047<\/a>), joint with our very own Jianfeng Zhang! In this paper, they propose to use PDE approach for general stochastic differential games which typically have multiple values and thus are viewed as a type of ill-posed problem in the literature. Bixing’s work concerns PDE characterization of the dynamic set value function. It provides a convenient and powerful tool for studying general games. Want to learn more? Student Spotlight: <\/strong>Congratulations to Mustafa Aydin for his recent paper “Uniform bounds and the inviscid limit for the Navier-Stokes equations with Navier boundary conditions\u201d (https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2404.17111<\/a>)\u00a0written jointly with our very own Professor Igor Kukavica and provisionally accepted in the SIAM Journal of Mathematical Analysis. In this paper, the authors address a key problem in fluid dynamics, namely understanding how solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations (describing viscous fluids) behave as viscosity becomes very small, approaching the ideal fluid behavior described by the Euler equations.\u00a0This work bridges the gap between realistic fluid models and idealized ones used in many scientific and engineering applications.\u00a0Congratulations<\/span>\u00a0on these excellent research advances, Mustafa!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n \n <\/div>\n\n\n \n \n \n

Congratulations to Siyang Liu for his recent paper, \u201cFukaya categories of hyperplane arrangements\u201d, which hit the arXiv this summer\u00a0(https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2405.05856<\/a>).<\/p>\n

This work confirms a 2009 conjecture of Lauda-Licata-Manion and provides evidence for the general recent conjecture of Lekili-Segal on the equivariant Fukaya categories of symplectic manifolds with Hamiltonian torus actions. Student Spotlight:<\/strong> Congratulations to Jiaqi Liu<\/strong>\u00a0for acceptance of her paper, “Converging\/diverging self-similar shock waves: from collapse to reflection,\u201d into the SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis!<\/p>\n

This is one of two recent papers by Jiaqi (https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2310.18483<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2403.12247<\/a>) in which she rigorously proves the existence of the self-similar converging\/diverging waves, famously knowns as the Guderley-Landau-Stanyukovich solution to the non-isentropic Euler equations in gas dynamics.<\/p>\n

Jiaqi presented her results in April at PDEs in Fluid Mechanics and Atmospheric Sciences conference held at West Virginia University, and we expect many more invitations in her future. Congratulations, Jiaqi!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n \n <\/div>\n\n\n \n \n \n

Student Spotlight<\/strong>: We’d like to give a shoutout to 4th year Applied Math PhD student, Farhad de Sousa, for being one of our panelists at the new student orientation! This past summer, Farhad worked with Professor Jacob Bien, developing a statistical machine learning method for oceanographers studying microbial marine ecosystems. \u00a0Microbes in the ocean are responsible for half of all photosynthesis happening on earth. \u00a0His method, which is a mixture of Gaussians<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0model, automates and increases the accuracy of the data pipeline, ultimately allowing for the efficient quantification of different kinds of microbes in specific environments across the ocean.<\/p>\n

Student Spotlight<\/strong>: Congratulations to Gaozhan Wang for his acceptance to speak at the First INFORMS Conference on Financial Engineering and FinTech in Hong Kong. Gaozhan\u2019s talk, \u201cConvergence of PI Algorithms for Exploratory Stochastic Control Problems\u201d (based on\u00a0joint work<\/a>\u00a0with Professors Jin Ma and Jianfeng Zhang) was featured in a session on Machine Learning. Gaozhan was also invited to speak at the Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) this past June. Student Spotlight<\/strong>: Congratulations to Vlad Roman<\/strong> for his latest preprint, \u201cThe commuting variety of pgl_n\u201d, now available on the arXiv https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2402.11106<\/a>. Working in positive characteristic, Vlad extends classical results of Motzkin\u2014Taussky, Richardson, and evy to show that when p divides n, the commuting variety of the Lie algebra pgl_n has exactly two irreducible components. Vlad will be presenting his work at the Postgraduate Group Theory Conference at the niversity of Birmingham this summer as well as the conference Groups and their actions: algebraic, geometric and combinatorial aspects in Levico Terme, Italy. Student Spotlight<\/strong>: Congratulations to Ziyi (Cora) Liang<\/strong> for her paper \u201cIntegrative conformal p-values for out-of-distribution testing with labelled outliers\u201d, joint with Matteo Sesia (in Marshall) and Wenguang Sun, which just appeared in January 2024 in Journal of the Royal Statistical Society Series B! We know Cora will continue to make ground-breaking advances in the theory of machine learning, but she\u2019s also an amazing teacher! She is this year\u2019s recipient of the Harris Teaching Prize for her outstanding efforts and results in teaching and re-designed Math 40 to better meet the needs of our students. Student Spotlight<\/strong>: Congratulations to Robin Rong<\/strong> for acceptance to the SLMath Summer Program on H-Principle hosted in Sendai, Japan! The homotopy principle, developed by Gromov, uses topological methods to solve non-linear PDEs, so this topic dovetails nicely into Robin\u2019s research with our own Professor Julian Chaidez. And a huge THANK YOU to Robin for his work organizing MGSA’s amazing Directed Reading Program (https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/mgsa\/drp\/<\/a>) which pairs undergraduate students with graduate student mentors to read a math textbook over the semester and present on what they learn. Student Spotlight<\/strong>: Dr. Elif Uskuplu<\/strong>, who successfully defended her thesis on October 17, has made groundbreaking strides in extending Homotopy Type Theory (HoTT), an endeavor crucial for delving into the intricacies of 2-category theory. She\u2019s co-authored two published papers, in\u00a0IEEE Access\u00a0and\u00a0Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics, and has another recent pre-print for which she is single author.
