In each of these courses we try as much as possible to maintain some uniformity in the quality, <a style=\"color: #000000\" href=\"https:\/\/atweb.usc.edu\/articagrmt\/artic.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">content<\/a>, and level-of-difficulty across instructors and semesters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">But we also encourage individual instructors to innovate and experiment with new teaching methods and materials, especially in the face of changes to classroom environments and emerging technologies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">To balance these competing motivations, the Math Department will assign a Course Coordinator for each course in a given semester and set some <strong>expectations<\/strong>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">Each course has a <strong>required textbook<\/strong> and a <strong><a style=\"color: #000000\" href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/mathematics\/topics-list\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">list of essential topics<\/a><\/strong> based on that book, both established at the department level.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000\">Each course has a common system for <strong>homework<\/strong>, established by the department.\u00a0<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #595959\">Instructors often assign <em>additional<\/em> formats of classwork like weekly quizzes, computer or programming labs, discussion activities for small groups, oral exams, or semester-long capstone projects.\u00a0 There is wide flexibility here.\u00a0 Such additions are welcome but not required.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Each semester has a <strong>common final exam<\/strong> based on the required textbook and topics.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #595959\">The group of instructors will write the exam collectively and decide the <strong>conditions<\/strong> for that exam, especially whether or not to allow calculators or formula sheets. They will also discuss the <strong>grade weight<\/strong> to be assigned for the common final, which is typically 30-40% of the final course grade.\u00a0 The exam will be graded collectively by the group of instructors and graduate teaching assistants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #595959\">If a student misses a common final exam and is allowed an <strong><a style=\"color: #595959\" href=\"https:\/\/catalogue.usc.edu\/content.php?catoid=18&amp;navoid=7145\">Incomplete Grade (IN)<\/a><\/strong>, they may resolve their IN by taking the course&#8217;s common final in a subsequent semester.\u00a0 That semester&#8217;s Course Coordinator will communicate with such students and inform them of the conditions and topics represented on that semester&#8217;s exam.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n  <\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":328,"featured_media":0,"parent":0,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-2822","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.1.1 -
