What if that system could be adapted to conserve the water that runs through it and generate renewable energy to meet the state\u2019s growing demand for power? USC Dornsife is at the forefront of an initiative to do just that.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blockhold\">\n<div class=\"textblock\">\n<h2>Challenge<\/h2>\n<p>As climate change intensifies, California faces more frequent and severe droughts, while also striving to meet its ambitious goal of achieving 100% clean energy by 2030. With much of the state\u2019s water transported through open-air aqueducts, evaporation claims an estimated 63 billion gallons annually \u2014 water that could otherwise support communities, ecosystems and agriculture.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the transition to renewable energy requires innovative solutions that don\u2019t compete for land needed for housing, farming and conservation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1977\" src=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/07\/down-arrow.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/07\/down-arrow.png 1000w, https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/07\/down-arrow-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/07\/down-arrow-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/07\/down-arrow-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/07\/down-arrow-320x320.png 320w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"textblock\">\n<h2>The Vision<\/h2>\n<p>USC Dornsife\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/news\/stories\/public-exchange-expertise-for-communities\/\">Public Exchange<\/a> (PX) is leading the <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/stories\/solar-canals-a-bright-solution-for-californias-water-and-energy-needs\/\">California Solar Canal Initiative<\/a> (CSCI), a collaborative effort to explore how covering aqueducts with solar panels could help solve two major challenges at once: reducing water loss from evaporation while generating clean energy.<\/p>\n<p>Bringing together experts from seven universities, nonprofits, government agencies and the private company Solar AquaGrid, the initiative is developing the strategies and decision-making tools needed to make large-scale implementation possible.
