When I die will I steam like a tea kettle?
\nThe one at my grandmother\u2019s house is silver<\/p>\n

and whistles; in the night
\nits music bounded in stone and moonlit<\/p>\n

woods. In this quiet dark I\u2019d
\nsneak to the shower room<\/p>\n

for the wetness of water droplets
\nhot on my legs, the easy bliss of a<\/p>\n

showerhead, the puckering chill of the tile
\nagainst my back, reclined.<\/p>\n

In Chicago it\u2019s white and plastic,
\nflimsy, as if it would melt<\/p>\n

the moment my eyes
\nunfocused, steam turning stale wooden cabinets<\/p>\n

to mulch. Back then, you\u2019d come downstairs
\nto make a tuna sandwich<\/p>\n

as I waited for the water to boil.
\nNow I forget to respond to your messages<\/p>\n

and I can\u2019t even imagine dying,
\nI don\u2019t know what it would look like;<\/p>\n

would you steam like that screaming kettle in the woods?
\nIn California it\u2019s raining,<\/p>\n

dirt particles suspended in the air
\nweighed down by new humidity, washed<\/p>\n

away, drops jump through
\nthe gap under my door.<\/p>\n

They leave a big wet mark, I wait for it to
\nevaporate in the cold \u2013<\/p>\n

and where is the summer we were promised?
\nWhere are the grandchildren?<\/p>\n

When I finally call you back over
\nthe timefolds, you talk about the poems<\/p>\n

you\u2019ve been writing, the satisfaction, the fear, emergent
\nand punishing now in this last season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n <\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Introducing the Winner<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Emma Ashley, a senior studying creative writing<\/a> and French<\/a>, is originally from Oak Park, Illinois. Always interested in the shape of space and time, Ashley was inspired to write her winning entry, the previously unpublished poem \u201cWet Season,\u201d as a way to think about the distances between herself and her loved ones, both across the world and over the years.<\/p>\n

Ashley started writing poetry in 2019 during her freshman year at USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, finding relief in the art as a practice of reflection. She continued writing during the pandemic and says she has since \u201cfallen in love with the process of careful and loving reflection that poetry requires.\u201d Now in her final year at USC Dornsife, Ashley is the recipient of the 2023 Silverman Family Memorial Award<\/a> for poetry and plans to continue pursuing her journey as a poet after she graduates. Her work has appeared in Palaver Arts Magazine<\/i><\/a> and Zeniada Magazine<\/i><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n <\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
