class=\"f--field f--description\">\n\n    \n  <p>For <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/news\/stories\/percival-everett-wins-2025-pulitzer-prize-for-james\/\">Pulitzer Prize<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/news\/stories\/percival-everett-wins-national-book-award-for-james\/\">National Book Award<\/a> winner <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/profile\/percival-everett\/\">Percival Everett<\/a>, writing novels is an excuse to indulge his avid curiosity. \u201cI often become obsessed with a subject and then realize that a novel is brewing,\u201d he says. \u201cI like discovery and, as I don\u2019t know much, the world is wide open to me. I like being confused.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That enthusiasm for variety, coupled with his humble approach, has shaped the unusually wide-ranging body of work by this Distinguished Professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/engl\/\">English<\/a>. He\u2019s written a western, a murder mystery and a children\u2019s book. His novels have featured baseball players, Vietnam veterans, hydrologists and horse trainers. His most recent novel, <em>James <\/em>\u2014 which won the 2025 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Book Award in 2024 \u2014 is a retelling of Mark Twain\u2019s <em>Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Everett is also a jazz guitarist, fly fisher and painter, with an exhibition of his artwork opening in Milan this June.<\/p>\n<p>He and his wife, <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/profile\/danzy-senna\/\">Danzy Senna<\/a>, who is also a professor of English at USC Dornsife, were both finalists for the 2025 PEN\/Faulkner Award \u2014 Everett for <em>James<\/em> and Senna for her novel <em>Colored Television<\/em>. Today \u2014 in true Renaissance style \u2014 his work spans painting, sculpture, poetry and fiction.<\/p>\n<p>This fall, Culver City\u2019s Wende Museum will feature <a href=\"https:\/\/wendemuseum.org\/exhibition\/sextant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">his latest work<\/a>: a sculptural recreation of his childhood home in Cuba, built from sugar. It\u2019s an homage to the country\u2019s staple crop and a nod to impermanence. \u201cI rebuilt it as an act of resistance against time,\u201d says Mart\u00ednez Celaya. \u201cAnd by making it out of sugar, I acknowledged the fragility and ultimate futility of that resistance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The work is titled <em>The Sextant<\/em>, after the sailor\u2019s navigational tool. The story echoes Harkness\u2019 own experience: A scholar of the history of science and medicine, she was inspired to write fiction after reading a book she chanced upon at the airport in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, that imagined magical creatures living among us.<\/p>\n<p>Soon, Harkness began rising at 5:30 a.m. to write before teaching her classes. Her first novel, <em>A Discovery of Witches<\/em>, hit<em> The New York Times\u2019 <\/em>Best Sellers list in 2011. Five more best-selling novels followed, along with a popular television adaptation on which she served as an executive producer.<\/p>\n<p>Harkness now has a large community of devoted fans invested in the adventures of Bishop and her scientist-vampire lover, Matthew Clairmont. The title of her latest installment, <em>The Falcon and the Rose<\/em>, was announced earlier this year. Familiar sites give way to redevelopment. Wildfires reduce neighborhoods to ashes. \u201cEach drive or walk becomes an act of witnessing transformation,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Signifiers of these shifts \u2014 sunsets tinged with smoke, chain-link fences enclosing construction sites, palm trees on fire \u2014 appear frequently in her paintings and mixed-media work.<\/p>\n<p>Bellamy is also drawn to the city\u2019s fading memories. Even then, he saw music as a tool for social change \u2014 inspired in part by the civic engagement modeled by USC professors and programs.<\/p>\n<p>Born in Southern California to Panamanian parents, Blacc grew up surrounded by salsa, merengue and calypso. He began writing hip-hop lyrics at age 9, played trumpet in grade school, and formed the underground rap group Emanon before penning the Trojan tailgate favorite \u201cI Love USC\u201d as a student.<\/p>\n<p>After a corporate job layoff, Blacc pursued music full-time. His breakout hits, including \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nFZP8zQ5kzk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I Need a Dollar<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=U3_wGmEyYoY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Man<\/a>,\u201d earned international acclaim. Blacc\u2019s lyrics and vocal performance on \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=IcrbM1l_BoI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wake Me Up<\/a>,\u201d released by the late Swedish producer Avicii, helped the song achieve multiplatinum, chart-topping status.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Blacc continues layering his lyrics with meaning to amplify civic and social engagement. His lens has documented a Navajo coming-of-age ceremony in the American Southwest, Vodou practitioners in Brooklyn, New York, and costumed revelers at the Venice Carnival in Italy and D\u00eda de los Muertos in Mexico City.<\/p>\n<p>Carpenter\u2019s unusual dual degree \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/cognitive-science\/\">cognitive science<\/a> from USC Dornsife and film and television production from the USC School of Cinematic Arts \u2014 provided the ideal foundation for his work. \u201cCognitive science explores human understanding \u2014 how we perceive the world and the narrative or social structures we employ to do so,\u201d he says. \u201cI thought that was an excellent complement to film production.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The intersection of perception and storytelling inspired his latest project: a photo book documenting the modern religious revival happening across the United States. \u201cIn one of my cognitive science classes, we talked about \u2018great awakenings,\u2019 religious revivals that often occur around times of great social upheaval,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a pursuit with a personal connection for Carpenter, who was raised Mormon \u2014 a religion that arose during America\u2019s Second Great Awakening of the early 1800s. His new work extends beyond traditional beliefs. One stop on his tour?
