The Literacy Project is a JEP program, operated by USC ReadersPlus, that allows faculty, staff, alumni, and graduate students the opportunity to mentor K-6 students in literacy development.
Literacy Project volunteers receive training in the area of literacy content, and learn how to create lesson plans that will cater to a student's individual needs and interests. Once trained, volunteers are assigned to work one to two hours per week with an individual student at one of the original USC "Family of Five" elementary schools (32nd Street, Foshay, Norwood, Vermont, and Weemes). Over the course of the semester, Literacy Project volunteers help children to develop effective strategies that facilitate independent reading.
The College Magazine featured the Literacy Project in an article.
If you have a few hours to spare and would like to volunteer with the Literacy Project, for more information, please contact USC ReadersPlus Director, Tina Koneazny, by email or 213-740-1834.
