September 24:\u00a0<\/strong>Our guest is\u00a0Sherry Turkle,\u00a0the Abby Rockefeller Mauz\u00e9 Professor of the Social Studies of Science and Technology in the Program in Science, Technology, and Society at MIT, and the founding director of the MIT Initiative on Technology and Self.<\/p>\n

October 8:<\/strong>\u00a0In September 2020, Jennings became the newspaper\u2019s first assistant managing editor for culture and talent, part of the media company\u2019s efforts\u00a0to<\/span>\u00a0reform hiring practices, increase staff diversity and overhaul how it treats Black and Latino journalists and communities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

As police violence against Black Americans sparked protests across the country and raw and painful discussions about the newsroom\u2019s mistreatment of Black and brown journalists and its coverage of communities of color. Staffers of color spoke of being undervalued and marginalized, of battling a myopia that favored the perspectives and interests of white and wealthier Angelenos. They described being passed over for raises, plum assignments, and opportunities\u00a0to<\/span>\u00a0advance.<\/div>\n

October 22:<\/strong>\u00a0A presentation from 29-year-old filmmaker, Chapman University instructor, and surfer, Devyn Bisson, who will be discussing her work-in-progress film about the 80-year-old Japanese women who are part of a group called the Ama who free dive for abalone. Devyn also runs a non-profit organization called the Center for Documentary Progression for emerging filmmakers and she will be centering her talk around the practice of documentary filmmaking through lessons of her projects.<\/span><\/p>\n

Her film,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>The Wave I Ride<\/i><\/span>, is about Paige Alms, a big-wave surfer from Maui and one of the few women\u00a0to<\/span>\u00a0\u201csurf the legendary Jaws Break.\u201d Bisson\u2019s next film,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Lighthouse Molyvos<\/i><\/span>, follows the work of international lifeguards rescuing Syrian refugees in the Aegean Sea as they attempted\u00a0to<\/span>\u00a0land in Lesbos<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n \n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n\n\n\n <\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

December 3:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>Venkataraman is the head of the editorial page of The Boston Globe and served as Senior Advisor for climate change innovation in the Obama White House, where she forged partnerships across communities, companies, and government to prepare for climate disasters. She also advised the President\u2019s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology during the Ebola epidemic, and served as director of global policy initiatives at the Broad Institute. Since 2011, Venkataraman has taught in the program on science, technology and society at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.<\/p>\n

January 21:\u00a0<\/strong>In her presentation, “Hiding in Plain Sight: The Forgotten LA Legacy and Queer Lives of W.A. Clark Jr. & Harrison Post,”\u00a0Brown, author of\u00a0Twilight Man: Love and Ruin in the Shadows of Hollywood and the Clark Empire<\/i>, will discuss the incredible life of Harrison Post\u2014 the enigmatic lover of William Andrews Clark, Jr., one of the richest men in 1920s Hollywood\u2014 and the battle for a family fortune.<\/p>\n

Brown began her research by setting out\u00a0to<\/span>\u00a0learn more about a mysterious photograph, one that her grandmother had tucked away in a bedroom drawer. \u201cThe bonkers saga she uncovered,\u201d according\u00a0to<\/span>\u00a0the New York Times, \u201cinvolves Prohibition-era Hollywood, the Copper Kings of Montana, a treacherous sister, a Nazi prison, a crook named Charles Crooks, Mexico City nightclubs and a gallant whippet named Gynt. At its center is a gay love story that, as Brown writes in the introduction, had been \u2018wrongfully erased.\u2019\u201d<\/div>\n

February 11:\u00a0<\/strong>Anna Malaika Tubbs will discuss the power of motherhood by briefly introducing the three women at the center of her book – Alberta King, Berdis Baldwin, and Louise Little – and connecting their lives\u00a0to<\/span>\u00a0the issues mothers are facing in our country\u00a0to<\/span>day. Audience members will not only walk away knowing more about the three mothers but will also reflect on what could change if we centered mothers in our stories more often.<\/p>\n

Anna is a multidisciplinary expert on current and historical understandings of race, gender, and equity. After graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Stanford University with a BA in anthropology, Anna earned her MA in gender studies and her Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Cambridge as a Bill and Melinda Gates Cambridge Scholar. February 25:\u00a0<\/strong>When the LA Phil turned 100, Leni had been there for 40 of them. In her earliest years when she was responsible for community-related programs often far from Bunker Hill, she was dubbed the conscience of the Philharmonic. By the end of her tenure, the LA Phil was well woven into the fabric of ever-evolving Los Angeles, and the Orchestra\u2019s engagement with LA was everyone\u2019s responsibility.<\/p>\n

With smoke still in the air after the 1992 civil disturbances, Leni organized concerts in the Black and Korean communities\u00a0to<\/span>\u00a0help Los Angeles heal. For the free Bowl concert welcoming Gustavo Dudamel\u2019s arrival as Music Director, Leni\u2019s job was\u00a0to<\/span>\u00a0make sure that the audience included thousands of people who had never been there before.<\/div>\n

As part of the courtship of Gustavo, Leni was responsible for the founding community partnerships that evolved into YOLA, Youth Orchestra Los Angeles, now serving upwards of 1,500 students.<\/div>\n

In recognition of her tenure, the Leni Boorstin YOLA Administrative Fellowship was established which will offer two young people each year experience working side-by-side LA Phil and YOLA staff members.<\/div>\n

March 25:\u00a0<\/strong>Few cultural revolutions can trace their origins as precisely as the one that\u00a0to<\/span>ok place in 3420 Boelter Hall at UCLA on October 29, 1969, the day the internet came into existence.\u00a0Kleinrock\u00a0developed the mathematical theory of packet networks, the technology that underpins the internet. The first node of the ARPANET was established at Kleinrock\u2019s UCLA lab, and a new era of connectivity was born.<\/p>\n

The Interface Message Processor Log entry for the first message sent over the ARPANET is currently on view in\u00a0Communications Systems in a Global Context<\/em>.\u00a0Join us in welcoming Kleinrock, who will share the events surrounding that seminal moment at UCLA\u2019s Boelter Hall, which is now known as the Kleinrock Internet History Center.<\/p>\n

Kleinrock\u00a0is a Distinguished Professor of Computer Science at UCLA. Kleinrock has served as Professor of Computer Science at UCLA since 1963 and as department Chair from 1991\u20131995. He has received eight honorary degrees, published over 250 papers, authored six books, and has supervised the research of more than 50 PhD students. In 2007, Kleinrock received the National Medal of Science, the highest honor for achievement in science bestowed by the President of the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n \n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n\n\n\n <\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
