Four-time Emmy Award-winning composer Laura Karpman’s music has been performed by the Los Angeles and Czech Philharmonics; the Orchestra of St. Luke’s; the Houston, National, Detroit, and Prague Symphonies; and the American Composers Orchestra. Her multimedia work Ask Your Mama, written for Jessye Norman and The Roots, premiered at Carnegie Hall and the Hollywood Bowl. Scores include Steven Spielberg’s miniseries Taken, Showtime’s Odyssey 5, ABC’s In Justice, and PBS’ The Living Edens. She has composed three musicals for A Noise Within. Concert music awards include the Ives Fellowship from the American Academy of Arts & Letters and ASCAP Foundation and Meet the Composer grants. Karpman received her doctorate from Juilliard, studying with Milton Babbitt. She is a professor of music and film at UCLA’s School of Theater, Film & Television—and currently collaborating with M. G. Lord and Shannon Halwes on One-Ten, a multimedia opera commissioned by the Los Angeles Opera on the 70th Anniversary of the 110 Freeway.
