Small Grants for Trainees and Faculty
Call for Proposals
USC’s Center for the Changing Family (CCF), an interdisciplinary Center for USC faculty and trainees who study families and close relationships, is awarding grants for work that speaks to family or relationship issues, broadly construed. Funds can be used for data collection, piloting measures, purchasing data collection related materials, paying participants, supporting patient or research participant remote access or telehealth connectivity, presenting work at conferences, paying staff or students, or other expenses. Funds can also be used for community projects, e.g. outreach and education. Funds cannot be used for PI salary without prior approval from CCF.
Our spring 2021 program has two tiers: Trainee Awards (open to graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and other trainees) and Faculty Awards (open to faculty at all ranks). Proposals will be reviewed by our Research Subcommittee (Emily Smith-Greenaway, Darby Saxbe, and Beth Smith). All USC trainees and faculty may apply, but CCF-affiliated faculty and their trainees will be given priority. If you are interested in joining CCF, please visit our website for more information and email piaselle@usc.edu or dsaxbe@usc.edu.
PROPOSAL GUIDELINES
The entire proposal has a ONE-page limit: single-spaced with 1” margins on all sides in
12-point Times New Roman font. The 1-page proposal must include:
(1) A Project Description that contains project goals and/or research questions, a statement of the work to be undertaken, methods and procedures, and expected impact or significance of the work. In other words, explain the project you want to do, why you want to do this project, and the anticipated benefits that the project might bring.
(2) A list of study Personnel (the Principal Investigator and any other collaborators) along with a very brief explanation of how they are connected with CCF.
(3) A very brief Budget and Budget Justification that describes anticipated expenses and their use in the project. Most awards will be <$5,000 but we may consider larger requests. Please do not ask for more than you need, as funds are limited. No indirect fees can be charged to the award.
Applications should be submitted electronically to ccfam@usc.edu with “CCF Grants Program-Trainee” or “CCF Grants Program-Faculty” in the subject heading. Proposals will be reviewed on a rolling basis; for full consideration, apply before Feb 19th, 2021. Feel free to contact Dr. Saxbe with any questions.
Small Grants Program for Projects Related to COVID-19
Call for Proposals
Learn more about our funded projects related to COVID-19 here.
Overview. The COVID-19 pandemic has had widespread impact on families. The closure of schools and elder-care facilities has created a family care crisis, and shelter-at-home orders can place new economic strain on families and contribute to stress, crowding, changes in behavioral routines and physical health, and risk for domestic violence. These orders have unequal effects on families, may particularly affect families involved with the criminal justice system or child welfare system, and may exacerbate pre-existing socioeconomic and racial disparities. Families undergoing change – including separation or divorce or life transitions like high school graduation, the transition to parenthood, or bereavement – may be particularly vulnerable.
USC’s Center for the Changing Family (CCF), an interdisciplinary Center for USC faculty who study the contemporary family, is awarding grants to fund small projects or pilot studies that speak to these and related issues. Funds can be used for data collection, piloting measures, purchasing data collection related materials, paying participants, supporting patient or research participant remote access or telehealth connectivity, paying staff or students, or other expenses.
All USC faculty and trainees (e.g., graduate students, postdoctoral fellows) are invited to apply, but CCF-affiliated faculty and their trainees will be given priority when awarding funds. If you are a USC faculty member interested in joining CCF, please email dsaxbe@usc.edu. For more information on the Center, see https://dornsife.usc.edu/labs/usc-ccf/
