Welcome to the ShLAC Lab!

The Language & Computation (ShLAC) Lab deploys computational approaches towards understanding human language and its place in the larger cognitive system.

In ShLAC Lab research, we combine a range of approaches, including natural language processing, statistical machine learning, computational cognitive science, and formal linguistic theory. We investigate real-world, natural language use: we’ve worked on everything from cross-linguistic video game language use to under-resourced and endangered languages. Computation allows us to break into the key questions about human language, from how language is acquired, to how it is cognitively structured, to how language works within human society.

ShLAC Lab is housed in the Linguistics Department at USC.
