The Language & Computation Lab deploys computational approaches towards understanding human language and its place in the larger cognitive system.
In ShLAC Lab research, we use a range of computational methodologies, including natural langauge processing, statistical machine learning, and formal linguistic theory. We investigate real-world, natural language use: we've worked on everything from cross-linguistic videogame language use to under-resourced and endangered languages. Computation allows us to break into the key questions about human language, from how language is acquired, to how it is cognitively structured, to how language works within human society.
ShLAC Lab is housed in the Linguistics department at USC.
