{"id":534,"date":"2023-04-19T18:47:29","date_gmt":"2023-04-19T18:47:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/ksi\/?page_id=534"},"modified":"2025-02-05T21:47:05","modified_gmt":"2025-02-05T21:47:05","slug":"us-korea-next-gen-scholar","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/ksi\/for-students\/287-2\/us-korea-next-gen-scholar\/","title":{"rendered":"US-Korea NextGen Scholars Program"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n  \n    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div\n  class=\"cc--component-container cc--rich-text \"\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  >\n  <div class=\"c--component c--rich-text\"\n    \n      >\n\n    \n      \n<div class=\"f--field f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <p><strong>The US-Korea NextGen Scholars Program is an initiative by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csis.org\/programs\/korea-chair\/us-korea-nextgen-scholars-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CSIS Korea Chair<\/a>\u00a0and the USC Korean Studies Institute,\u00a0<\/strong><strong>with support from the Korea Foundation to help mentor the next generation of Korea specialists in the United States.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This unique two-year program (non-resident) provides opportunities for mid-career Korea specialists to discuss issues of importance to US-Korea relations with policymakers, government officials, and opinion leaders in Korea and the United States.<\/p>\n<p>The NextGen Scholars are mentored by Korea specialist <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.csis.org\/people\/victor-cha\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Victor Cha of CSIS<\/a><\/strong> and Georgetown University. The program is further supported by an advisory committee of American and Korean advisers with vast experience in academia, government, and the private sector.<\/p>\n<p>Learn more about the previous 2020-2021 class of scholars\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.csis.org\/programs\/korea-chair\/us-korea-nextgen-scholars-program\/2020%E2%80%932021-us-korea-nextgen-scholars-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Program Goals<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Create a network of mid-career Korea specialists with diverse backgrounds and experiences who will make long-term contributions to the US-Korea relationship.<\/li>\n<li>Help Korea specialists become more relevant to the policymaking process.<\/li>\n<li>Increase the visibility of young Korea specialists and provide opportunities for engagement with policymakers and the private sector.<\/li>\n<li>Encourage new Korea-related research and projects and collaboration among participants.<\/li>\n<li><em>NextGen Scholars<\/em>\u00a0will author an op-ed and film a video lecture (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1QTSWc9ObDU&amp;list=PLoKXWulSFYmNlSHzSZgwdIq2Wh_c2PgGT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Korea Questions<\/a><\/strong>) as part of the program graduation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Washington<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Washington Program takes place in DC in January. The Washington Program is the first opportunity for scholars to connect in person. As scholars meet with policymakers, academics, and journalists, the goal of the program is to introduce people to the workings of Washington, which is accomplished through presentations by Korea experts, current and former government officials, and field visits to government departments and Congress.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nLos Angeles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Los Angeles Program is held at the University of Southern California in spring. The theme of the Los Angeles Program is academic professionalization and media training, with scholars participating in op-ed writing workshops, media training, and taping of the \u201cKorea Questions\u201d video series on the USC campus. Scholars will also engage in professionalization sessions on publishing and interviewing, and other related academic mentoring.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Seoul<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The last part of the program takes place in summer in Seoul. Scholars will get the chance to meet with ROK government officials, journalists, academics and the US embassy.
