All of the programs bring hands-on and inquiry-based STEM experiences to students in each of our seven partner schools: Thirty-Second Street Performing Arts Magnet, Foshay Learning Center, Norwood Street Elementary, Lenicia Weemes Elementary, Vermont Avenue Elementary, John Mack Elementary, and Dr. Theodore T. We are grateful for their ongoing support.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#test\"><strong>Scroll down to learn more!\u00a0<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n                          \n  \n                          <\/div>\n                      <div class=\"swiper-slide\">\n              <h3 class=\"pane-title\">\n                Young Scientists Program\n              <\/h3>\n                                  \n<div class=\"f--field f--description\">\n\n    \n  <p>The Young Scientists Program (YSP) is an inquiry-based, hands-on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) educational outreach program operated by the USC Joint Educational Project. The program aims to address a critical lack of science education in JEP partner schools by recruiting STEAM undergraduate and graduate students to serve as Teaching Assistants (TAs) who, under the direction of the JEP STEM Programs Manager and individual YSP Site Coordinators, bring scientific laboratory experiences directly to students and their teachers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Scroll down to learn more!\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n                          \n  \n                          <\/div>\n                      <div class=\"swiper-slide\">\n              <h3 class=\"pane-title\">\n                Medical STEM Program\n              <\/h3>\n                                  \n<div class=\"f--field f--description\">\n\n    \n  <p>The Cancer-STEM Education Partnership Program is part of the USC JEP Medical STEM program and is funded by the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center. The idea is to teach concepts relating to the medical and cancer fields and assess its impact on a select group of second grade students within our partner schools. By implementing the program in participating Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) schools, we aim to familiarize and create interest in current topics of medical sciences specifically looking at the science surrounding cancer. The educational intervention includes an 16-week, Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)-aligned curriculum, with lessons and materials tailored to the standards and academic benchmarks for second grade level. The curriculum is subdivided into a compilation of lesson plans based in various STEM disciplines in the medical and cancer field. The Medical Science Program (MSP), under the administration of the Joint Educational Project (JEP) at the University of Southern California, provides the appropriate training, lesson plans and materials for undergraduate and graduate student staff, and each individual staff member is assigned to a second grade level classroom in the participating school sites in the LAUSD.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Scroll down to learn more!\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n                          \n  \n                          <\/div>\n                      <div class=\"swiper-slide\">\n              <h3 class=\"pane-title\">\n                WonderKids\n              <\/h3>\n                                  \n<div class=\"f--field f--description\">\n\n    \n  <p>WonderKids is a STEM education program that provides inquiry-based science education and learning materials to K-5 students in the community. In addition to exposing children to advanced scientific fields, careers and concepts at an early age, the program also serves to introduce students to professionals in specific STEAM fields. This offers socially and culturally diverse role models in science with the ultimate goal of encouraging these students to pursue their own scientific education and endeavors. class=\"f--field f--wysiwyg\">\n\n    \n  <p>The Young Scientists Program is funded in part with the generous support of the\u00a0Michael and Cindy Winn\u00a0Foundation. YSP is run out of USC Dornsife\u2019s Joint Educational Project. YSP is comprised of a Program Director and undergraduate teaching assistants (TAs) from the life, natural, earth and engineering sciences, all of whom have a passion for education, community service work and science.<\/p>\n<p>The program was originally introduced to Lenicia B. Weemes Elementary School in 2006 through a grant from the Weingart Foundation. In 2008 the program expanded to Vermont Elementary School. In 2010 the program was renamed the Young Scientists Program (YSP) \u2013 and is now present at seven of the USC Family of Schools and is more vibrant than ever.<\/p>\n<p>The Young Scientist Program is dedicated to inspiring diverse students to become leaders and innovators in science and engineering. YSP science labs are designed to ignite and foster young children\u2019s curiosity about the physical, marine, natural, life and engineering sciences. YSP bridges scientific gaps between what is taught in the classroom and what the young students see around them in their everyday lives and the &#8216;real world&#8217;.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>YSP promotes science literacy and encourages the pursuit of careers in the STEM fields by introducing students to areas of scientific study through interactive demonstrations and experiments brought into the classroom.<\/li>\n<li>YSP also allows for TAs to interact with each other; share teaching stories and teaching methods.<\/li>\n<li>YSP is committed to quality hands on science instruction. YSP brings scientific laboratory experiences directly to students and their teachers with the goal of supplementing current science instruction, complimenting LAUSD and state grade level science learning standards, strengthening science literacy and promoting interest in scientific careers.<\/p>\n<div class=\"html-content lg-font\">\n<p>One of YSP\u2019s primary objectives is to increase science activities for a larger number of our neighborhood children to encourage them to consider careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and to apply what they are learning in the classroom to the real world. This ensures that each science topic is taught in detail and that students can take their time on experiments, ask questions, write in their journals and read supplementary science literature on the topic.<\/p>\n<p>The YSP curriculum is multi-disciplinary and encourages innovative ways for engineers and scientists to work together.\u00a0 YSP experiments are hands-on allowing students to \u201clearn by doing.\u201d YSP encourages experiential learning, engaging children in thorough investigations with objects, materials, phenomena, and ideas and guiding students as they draw meaning and understanding from those experiences.<\/p>\n<p>Curriculum and YSP labs are created with the following thinking, teaching and learning skills in mind:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ul class=\"striped-list\">\n<li class=\"inline-title\">\n<div class=\"html-content\">\n<h3>Critical Thinking<\/h3>\n<p>TA\u2019s pose qualitative and quantitative questions during the lecture portion of the labs. The best questions are the ones that split opinions in class and lead to active discussions. No two classes are alike, so TAs tailor their teaching style depending on the class<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"inline-title\">\n<div class=\"html-content\">\n<h3>Interdisciplinary Teams<\/h3>\n<p>With some activities, TAs can split up students into groups according to specific science careers, extra-curricular activities, hobbies or science topics of interest.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"inline-title\">\n<div class=\"html-content\">\n<h3>Visual Explanations<\/h3>\n<p>Lesson plans use visuals that help students \u201csee\u201d the concepts; videos, images or models. These visuals, combined with the explanations and personal experiences help students understand each science topic.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"inline-title\">\n<div class=\"html-content\">\n<h3>Applied Experiments<\/h3>\n<p>Students conduct experiments with the goal of verifying, falsifying, or establishing the validity of their hypothesis. Students record their lecture notes and experiments in their YSP science journals. They learn that an experiment is a method of testing &#8211; with the goal of explaining &#8211; the nature of reality. YSP experiments vary from personal and informal to highly controlled.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"inline-title\">\n<div class=\"html-content\">\n<h3>Links to Practice<\/h3>\n<p>It is important to help students link their new knowledge in basic science concepts to the events that happen in their everyday life and the larger world. Current science news stories are often discussed in the classroom.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"inline-title\">\n<div class=\"html-content\">\n<h3>Links to Research<\/h3>\n<p>It is important that students understand that science is not a static set of knowledge but a dynamic process that occurs today, and that this is a process in which today\u2019s student will play an active role in the future.
