Academic Career<\/strong><\/h2>\n

James\u202f\u202fBullock is dean of the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences. He holds the Anna H. Bing Dean\u2019s Chair and a faculty appointment in the Department of Physics and Astronomy.<\/p>\n

Before joining USC in 2025, Bullock was dean of the School of Physical Sciences and a Professor of Physics and Astronomy at the University of California Irvine. He received a B.S. in Physics and a B.S. in Math from The Ohio State University in 1994 and a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 1999. \u00a0 After postdoctoral positions at The Ohio State University and as a Hubble Fellow at Harvard University, he came to UCI as an Assistant Professor in 2004. He is a Fellow of the American Association Advancement of Science, \u00a0a Fellow of the American Physical Society, and has been named a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher in Space Science seven times (2019 – 2025). \u00a0Professor Bullock served as the 17th Chair of the UCI Physics and Astronomy Department from 2017-2019 before becoming the 9th Dean of the UCI School of Physical Sciences in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n <\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Research<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Aided by super-computer simulations and analytic models, Professor Bullock studies how galaxies and their constituent dark matter halos have formed and evolved over billions of years of cosmic time. By analyzing data that astronomers have collected using the James Webb Space Telescope, the\u00a0Hubble Space Telescope, and other ground-based and space-based telescopes, he works to understand how galaxies, including the Milky Way and its Local Group of galaxies, emerged from the primordial universe. \u00a0One of his long-standing interests has been the use of astrophysical observations to constrain the microphysical nature of dark matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n <\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Activities<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Professor Bullock \u00a0is currently Chair of the Space Telescope Institute Council<\/a>, which oversees the management of STScI<\/a>, the home of the James Webb Space Telescope and other missions. \u00a0He served as the Chair of the\u00a0James Webb Space Telescope<\/a>\u00a0User\u2019s Committee<\/a>\u00a0from 2017-2022. Previously he was Chair of the working group that recommended the\u00a0Hubble Frontier Fields Program<\/a>, which is responsible for galaxy cluster image on the top of this page. \u00a0He is passionate about science outreach and appears regularly on the Science Channel\u2019s\u00a0How the Universe Works<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n <\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
